AMS Resources and Response to the Federal Science Crisis
In the summer of 2026, we will pilot test our new DataStreme Atmosphere MOOC. Approximately twenty educators will be invited to participate in this pilot experience, which will take place from June to August, with an in-person residency from July 13-18. We anticipate the full DataStreme Atmosphere MOOC will launch in early 2027. It will be free and open to all.
DataStreme: Meteorology For Educators is a mostly online, asynchronous curriculum focused on meteorology and atmospheric science. It is designed to take about 3-hours/week for 12 weeks to complete. Each week is devoted to a single topic and includes a PDF module, an activity, and a brief questionnaire. A final project involves developing a new lesson plan for your students and linking it to what you have learned in the course. Teaching and scientific mentors are available to provide personal feedback through the course. Optional Slack-based chat forums are also available. The course will be run via Google Classroom, so a Google account will be required.
The MOOC will open on June 1, 2026 and be available until August 28, 2026. It is a go-at-your-own-pace course, so you can complete it at your leisure during that time. However, we expect participants of the residency (see below) to have completed at least half the course before the residency begins.
Those who complete the course will receive official certificates from the AMS. We are also happy to provide custom certificates and transcripts to those who need them for professional advancement. Please note that this program is not officially affiliated with any university, so official course credit is not available.
The pilot test includes a one-week in-person residency, taking place July 13–18 at the National Weather Service Training Center in Kansas City, MO. Hotel accommodations and meals will be provided for all participants. Travel stipends are also available, determined by distance traveled.
The residency centers on meteorology and remote sensing, featuring speakers from government, private sector, and broadcast weather enterprises. Scientific and technical sessions will cover remote sensing fundamentals, using remote sensing data in forecasting, radar technology and analysis, aviation weather, storm chasing, weather modification, and more.
Pedagogical sessions will focus on sharing classroom challenges and success stories, navigating science imposter syndrome, and learning hands-on meteorological activities that don't require technology.
We are especially excited to announce the return of the Doppler on Wheels (DOW) vehicles. An entire day will be focused on a tour of a DOW vehicle and, weather permitting, an activity where participants will get to analyze their own data collected with the radar.
Applications for the pilot course have closed. We anticipate the full course to be open and available to the public in January 2027.
Our DataStreme: Marine Science for Educators and DataStream: Climate Science for Educators MOOCs will be pilot tested in Fall, 2026. Stay tuned to this page for more information about those courses to be posted in the summer.
