The American Meteorological Society (AMS) is offering all Scouts (both Scouting America and Girl Scouts USA) ages 10 and up an opportunity to earn the Weather-Ready Nation patch at the AMS Madison Summit. The program will teach Scouts about meteorology and give them an understanding of weather phenomena in the Madison, Wisconsin area.
All Scouts will learn aspects of meteorology and emergency management to become better prepared for weather-related natural disasters. Scouts will engage in one-on-one activities with professional meteorologists from the National Weather Service and the local media, atmospheric science researchers, and local emergency managers. During this program, Scouts will learn how to interpret symbols on a weather map, discover the differences between various weather alerts and how the public receives them, discuss what items need to be in an emergency kit, determine ways families and communities can be prepared in the event of a weather emergency, and more.
The Weather-Ready Nation patch requirements are designed so those in Scouting America are able to earn the Weather Merit Badge in its entirety by the end of the event, as well as complete a couple of the Emergency Preparedness Merit Badge requirements.
This event will take place on Sunday, 2 August 2026 (7:45 AM-12:00 PM CT).
We need your help! Please consider volunteering for a few hours on 2 August, 2026 from 7:45 am to 12:30 pm CST to help scouts become weather-ready. To sign up, click on the link below.

MORE INFO ABOUT HOW THE EVENT WILL WORK:
The Madison Summit 2026 is taking place during a difficult time in the history of the Weather, Water, and Climate community. Waning funding, increasing distrust in scientific expertise and data, and a volatile job market all present challenges for those seeking a future in weather, particularly new graduates. In many cases, success right now requires creativity, resilience and interdisciplinary skill development.
This networking event has two chief goals:
1. Provide a supportive, welcoming space designed for connection and belonging.
2. Provide an enhanced structure and means for networking, mentor match-making, and encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration and shared learning across sectors.
The reception will be structured using “roundtables” populated by experts from a variety of sectors in the Weather, Water and Climate community. Attendees are encouraged to visit the tables with topics most of interest to them, to chat with the experts and their colleagues about the topics. Roundtable topics may include preparing for an extended job search; finding your calling when the market demands creative new approaches; or working together to manage mental health struggles during a difficult time. Attendees may walk away with new connections, new mentors, new ideas and more.
The roundtable discussion and networking is entirely optional, and we of course encourage you to enjoy the venue, food and great company as you prefer.
