Committee on Atmospheric Radiation
Our interests
The AMS Committee on Atmospheric Radiation is concerned with all aspects of the earth-atmosphere system in which radiative processes play a role. These processes encompass a wide range of phenomena, including the absorption, emission and scattering of light by molecules, aerosols, cloud particles and terrestrial surfaces; measurement of the radiative properties of Earth-atmosphere system constituents; the role of radiation in weather and climate and the models that predict them; and the use of radiometric measurements and principles for remote sensing. Of specific concern to this committee are processes in which atmospheric radiation plays a key role, such as the greenhouse effect, the radiative impacts of natural and anthropogenic aerosols, cloud-climate interactions, sea surface temperature anomalies and associated effects on the Earth's radiation budget, changes in surface albedo and emissivity, and ozone depletion.
Who we are and what we do
Committee members are AMS members who have expertise in radiation measurements, modeling, and processes. The committee’s main responsibilities include organizing the AMS Conference on Atmospheric Radiation, recognizing AMS members with awards, and fielding questions from the AMS community related to atmospheric radiation (e.g. reviewing glossary terms and definitions). AMS accepts nominations for AtRad membership on a yearly basis. Committee members serve at least one, 3-year term starting in January of each year with staggered committee start years for continuity.
Call for Abstracts: AMS Conference on Atmospheric Radiation 2026
The 17th AMS Conference on Atmospheric Radiation (AtRad) is sponsored by the American Meteorological Society and organized by the Committee on Atmospheric Radiation. It will be held 3-7 August 2026, in Madison, Wisconsin, at the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center as part of the 2026 AMS Madison Summit. The AtRad conference will be held jointly with the 17th AMS conference on Cloud Physics, and alongside the 34th conference on Weather Analysis and Forecasting (WAF), the 30th conference on Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP), the 32nd conference on Severe Local Storms, the 25th conference on Planned and Inadvertent Weather Modification, the 22nd conference on Mountain Meteorology, and the eighth conference on Weather Warnings and Communication.
The 17th AMS Conference on Atmospheric Radiation solicits papers for sessions that cover a wide range of topics, including but not limited to:
* Joint with Mountain Meteorology
** Joint with Cloud Physics
*** Joint with WAF & NWP
Please submit your abstract electronically via the AMS conference website by 2 April 2026 (see the website for instructions). The abstract submission fee of $120 USD is charged at the time of submission and refundable, if the abstract is not accepted. Authors of accepted presentations will be notified via email by early May 2026.
Students, early career community members, and/or professionals from historically underserved communities are especially encouraged to submit their work for presentation. The conference chairs are planning for a welcoming and inclusive experience for all members of the Earth science community.
Early-career and student travel grants
The AMS Committee on Atmospheric Radiation is awarding up to five (5) travel grants of $400 each to support students and early-career presenters in attending the 17th Conference on Atmospheric Radiation. To apply, students and early-career presenters should submit a brief written statement on how they will benefit from attending the conference (no more than half a page) and include a copy of their abstract for the meeting. Presenters who wish to apply must submit their application to the program chairpersons by April 30th via email with the subject line “AMS 17Radiation - Early-career and Student Presenter Travel Allowance Application”: Andrew Buggee ([email protected]), Maria Hakuba ([email protected]), and Yolanda Shea ([email protected]).
