Conference Summaries for 2022 Events:

The 27th Conference on Probability and Statistics was held in conjunction with the AMS Annual Meeting January 24-27 2022, Houston, TX (held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic). The Committee on Probability and Statistics also worked with many other Committees to hold joint sessions. The full program can be found here. Highlights include:

  • Novel methods of verification and evaluation of forecasts, including verification and validation of space weather
  • Sessions in forecast verification and ensemble/probabilistic forecasting, joint with the Conference on Weather Analysis and Forecasting (WAF)/Conference on Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP)
  • Sessions in applications of statistics and machine learning for climate sciences, joint with the Conference on Artificial Intelligence for Environmental Science and Conference on Climate Variability and Change

    Conference Summaries for 2018 Events:

The 25th Conference on Probability and Statistics was held January 7-10 2018 in Austin, TX in conjunction with the AMS annual meeting.  Topics varied as they do for the probability and statistics committee, but a large focus was centered on ensemble and multi-model forecasting and communicating probabilistic information and predictive skill.  Other topics included representation of model uncertainty, machine learning, decision support, statistical post processing, verification and validation for extreme events, S2S and high resolution verification.

Our core science keynote speaker was Michael Scheuerer (NOAA) who spoke on “Generating Spatio-Temporal Precipitation Forecast Fields Based on the Output of the Global Ensemble Forecast System (GEFS)”.  We also had two additional invited speakers: Jeffrey Whitaker from NOAA, (“Parameterizing Model Uncertainty due to unresolved dynamics in ensemble forecasts”) and Betsy Wetherhead from Univ. of Colorado, Boulder (“Fostering Open Communication About Forecast Improvement”).

We held two themed joint sessions: we partnered with Artificial Intelligence (AI) for a Joint session on “Machine Learning and Statistics in Data Science” and Weather, Water, and Climate/Environmental Information Processing Technologies for a themed joint session on “Development and Communication of High-Resolution, Ensemble Forecast Information for Forecasting Extreme Weather”.   Each day also included a poster session.
