Mountain Meteorology Research and Leadership Awards

Mountain Meteorology Named Session Award

The Mountain Meteorology Named Session Award was established in 2016 and replaces the Mountain Meteorology Award. It is awarded honor a person in the community who has been a leader in our field and has exhibited a very high scientific standard. Awardees are chosen by the AMS committee on mountain meteorology and the award is presented during our conference series.

2022: Prof. John Horel
(Description Coming Soon!)

2020: Vanda Grubišic
In recognition of sustained and diverse contributions to the field of mountain meteorology.

2018: Prof. Jim Steenburgh
(with AMS Mountain Meteorology Committee Chair Justin Minder)

For significant contributions to understanding of orographic precipitation
and prediction of mountain weather, and for excellence in
public outreach and student mentorship.

2016: Prof. Shiyuan (Sharon) Zhong
(with AMS President Elect Matthew J. Parker)

For distinguished contributions to the understanding of boundary
layers in complex terrain through observational campaigns
and numerical simulation.

Mountain Meteorology Outstanding Early Career Award

This commission award honors individuals within 10 years of having earned their highest degree, or are under 40 years of age when nominated, who have made significant contributions to the discipline of Mountain Meteorology and are on a path to becoming a science leader in the community.

2022: Prof. Kristen Rasmussen

For advancing the scientific understanding of complex interactions between terrain and convective precipitation.

2020: Prof. Ivana Stiperski

For advancing fundamental understanding of
boundary layers and turbulence in complex terrain
and of mesoscale orographic airflow dynamics.

2018: Prof. Justin Minder
(with former AMS Mountain Meteorology Committee Chair
and mentor Dale Durran)

For advancing understanding of orographic precipitation and
mountain snowpack in the current and warmer climates.

Outstanding Service Award in Mountain Meteorology

This commission award honors individuals for their outstanding contributions to the Mountain Meteorology Community. Awardees are chosen by the AMS committee on mountain meteorology and the award is presented during our conference series.

especially through organization of high-quality and
inclusive conferences

2016: Dr. Heather Reeves

In recognition of her creativity in developing and
administrating the Mountain Meteorology
Webinar Series.

Mountain Meteorology Award

The mountain meteorology award was established in 2008 to honor a person in the community who has been a leader in our field and has exhibited a very high scientific standard. Awardees are chosen by the AMS committee on mountain meteorology and the award is presented during our conference series.

2014: Prof. Dale Durran

For innovative and fundamental contributions to the understanding of orographic airflow, including pioneering applications of numerical models.

2012: Prof. C. David Whiteman
(pictured at right with his wife, Johanna)

For high-quality research on valley flows and caring mentorship
of many people in the field of mountain meteorology

2010: Prof. Ronald Smith

For his longstanding contributions to the understanding of the
theory of orographic flows that includes both observational
and theoretical investigations.

2008: Dr. Robert Banta

For his pioneering contributions to the understanding of
micrometeorological flows via observational studies.
