Dr. Frank D. Marks, Jr., is the former Director of Hurricane Research Division at the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory. He received his B.S. in Meteorology from Belknap College in 1973 and his M.S. in 1975 and Sc.D. in 1981 from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He began his career in July 1980 as a Research Meteorologist and quickly ascended to a critical member of the Hurricane Research Division (HRD) at NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML). He served as the Director of the Hurricane Research Division for two decades.
Marks specialized in radar remote sensing of tropical cyclones and mesoscale convective systems to understand the storm kinematic and precipitation structure. His innovative work in understanding the structure of tropical cyclones using airborne, ground-based, and spaceborne radars and other remote sensing instruments have been instrumental in advancing hurricane research through adapting new technologies. Building on his foundational work with the NOAA fleet, he spearheaded the development and operation of Tail Doppler Radar (TDR) systems aboard the P-3 Orion and Gulfstream G-IV aircrafts, which have significantly enhanced NOAA’s ability to analyze and understand storm structures. His vision and innovative contributions on integrating airborne TDR observations into real-time operational forecast models led to significant improvement of intensity forecasts in NOAA’s operational hurricane model.
Marks utilized his management and leadership skills to NOAA’s benefit, serving as the research lead for NOAA’s Hurricane Forecast Improvement Program and co-chairing the Working Group for Tropical Cyclone Research for the Office of the Federal Coordinator for Meteorological Services and Supporting Research. As a mission manager for the NOAA High Altitude Jet procurement, Marks led the addition of the Gulfstream G-IV to the Hurricane Hunters fleet. He also co-led NOAA’s Hurricane Irene Service assessment team and published the influential report that led to future service advancement from NOAA’s National Weather Service.
After more than four decades of public service, Dr. Marks decided to retire and enjoy his golden times with family and granddaughter. The AMS Frank D. Marks, Jr. Symposium is dedicated to Frank and his lifetime companion, Anita, to celebrate his tremendous accomplishments and contributions to the Atmospheric Sciences community. We particularly invited his mentors, colleagues, collaborators, postdocs, and students to contribute to this symposium. We are grateful they accepted our invitation to present their latest research and collaborative work influenced and inspired by Frank and his research. The Symposium, to be held on Tuesday, 31 March during the 37th Conference on Hurricanes and Tropical Meteorology, will feature invited oral and poster presentations as well as a luncheon. Luncheon tickets are $23 and can be purchased during registration. Ticket will include a sandwich and a bottled soft drink.
