The 49th Conference on Broadcast Meteorology Call for Papers

The 49th Conference on Broadcast Meteorology, sponsored by the American Meteorological Society, returns to the Midwest!

The Broadcast Conference was held at the Hyatt Regency Milwaukee June 15th - 17th, 2022, with short courses on June 14th. This location served as both the conference meeting destination and the designated hotel accommodation, conveniently located less than 1 mile from Downtown Milwaukee, 1.3 miles from the Harley-Davidson Museum, 4.4 miles from Miller Park and about 8 miles from the airport.

As with every year, presentations that focus not only on recent weather events and weather phenomenon that are unique to our host region but to what happened in your backyard too are encouraged. As TV meteorologists, we encouraged broadcaster presentations, showcasing how science is communicated across the country. Below are some suggested areas that were discussed during our 2022 conference.

  • Communicating Resilience To Your Viewers;

  • Mental Health in the Newsroom and Online;

  • Coping with 21st Century Issues, including Sexism, Ageism, and Discrimination;

  • The Future of Local TV news/weather: Building trust and viewership through innovations;

  • Workflow Balance Between On-Air and Online Mediums;

  • Challenges in the Changing Media World;

  • Rainfall Extremes: From Droughts to Floods;

  • Weather and Climate, Observing, Forecasting, Communications, and Decisions: What We Have Learned- Where We Are Heading;

  • Station Scientist

Presentations in other genres, including connections with social science, oceanography, aviation, agriculture, astronomy, and space weather were also encouraged.

The deadline for abstracts was February 15, 2022. An abstract fee of $95 (payable by credit card or purchase order) was charged at the time of submission (refundable only if abstract is not accepted). The $95 abstract fee included the submission of your abstract, the posting of your extended abstract, and the uploading and recording of your presentation that will be archived on the AMS website. Authors of accepted presentations were notified via e-mail mid-March 2021. Instructions for formatting abstracts are on the AMS webpage at https://www.ametsoc.org/index.cfm/ams/meetings-events/abstract-author-and-presenter

All abstracts and conference presentations will be made available on the AMS website.

Weather and media vendors were encouraged to participate in the conference by purchasing AMS exhibit booth space to showcase their latest products and advancements. Exhibitors also participated in the conference by presenting during the conference sessions.
