2021 Annual Meeting and COVID-19

Dear AMS Members and Annual Meeting participants,

The novel coronavirus and the resulting disease, COVID-19, have indelibly impacted all of us. Its harshness with illness and in some cases, death coupled with economic and social hardship contribute to our anxiety. Yet, we take some comfort in knowing that so many people are coming together for the greater good, adapting, sharing, and innovating—all with grace and goodwill. And in our profession, we all will likely have stories (and maybe research!) of how science, risk communication, and model results were at the forefront of the public’s mind.

We (AMS staff and the planning committee) recognize that you all are concerned today about the next week, the next month, and the next year. Those are things we are concerned about, too, as we plan for the 101st Annual Meeting. We recognize the uncertainty of the situation, and with this in mind we are considering several options to ensure we are able to share our science with each other and continue to advance the well-being of the weather, water, and climate community and the broader public that we serve. Scenarios we are considering include an in-person meeting with added virtual options, a mix that is focused on mostly virtual participation but includes some in-person components, and a completely virtual meeting.

With this in mind, we are creatively thinking about how to retain the enormous benefits of the social and virtual connections. We are soliciting topics for sessions and abstracts, panels, and posters and exploring ways to honor our Awardees and new Fellows, develop meaningful opportunities for our sponsors, and showcase our exhibitors.

Our highest priority remains the health and safety of our attendees, staff, and communities in which our meetings will take place. We are closely and consistently monitoring news and guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Health Organization (WHO), and local health agencies regarding travel and events in New Orleans.

The best place to keep up with information for the annual meeting is on the 2021 Annual Meeting website. If you have questions or innovative ideas, we’d love to hear them! Reach out to us on Twitter (use #AMS2021), Facebook, or if you are an AMS member, on the AMS Community Open Forum (look for the 101st Meetings Q&A Discussion).

We thank you all for your support of AMS!
