Whether you’re a weather broadcaster, a climate scientist, a teacher, a reporter, or an enthusiast, you can engage with the weather, water, and climate enterprise through AMS.
As someone who went off the "typical" meteorologist path, I thought that I would lose my connection with AMS. One of my Early Career Leadership Academy classmates highly recommended that I join a board or committee. I've been able to make better connections with meteorologists and make them more aware of how we can work together. I'm looking forward to hopefully attending AMS 2024 in Baltimore and continuing to serve on BOGM, BECP, and the Social Media Committee!
Volunteering on an AMS Committee is a great way to give back to the organization and to people across the country! As a Student Observer on the AMS Committee on Emergency Management (CoEM), I'm able to work directly on outreach efforts for many different people. Through education of communities, our efforts can change lives and save people from devastating impacts caused by weather and natural disasters.
Volunteering at AMS was likely the smartest career move I made. Not only did I learn so much from other volunteers and staff, but it increased my network immensely and let me form life-long friendships. It has been so rewarding!
Being involved in AMS, as I have for many years, has been incredibly enriching. I've had the chance to meet and work with so many wonderful and talented people from around the country and the world that I would not have otherwise met, giving me insights and perspectives from people across the entirety of the weather enterprise. I've also learned about the atmospheric science world beyond my backyard!
My experiences with AMS volunteer opportunities have been amazing, in part because I see that our volunteer work truly makes a huge difference! It can be challenging, and many of us have demanding 'day jobs,' but in the end, the direction and culture of the AMS is determined to a large extent by volunteers. If you have ideas for how to improve the Society, or that would help it to fulfill its mission, please consider getting involved!
Volunteering with AMS has given me experience that I can carry onto my career once I finish graduate school. I have been able to find a place where there are so many resources and people who are willing to help me and provide advice for my future career endeavors.
