AMS Resources and Response to the Federal Science Crisis
As we prepare to launch our first free, open-access textbook, Introduction to Ocean Sciences and its accompanying Ocean in Action manual, we are excited for a future where all our textbooks could be free!
This is a preliminary timeline.
The books will be released with a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND 4.0 license. This means faculty are free to copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format as long as you give appropriate credit, a link to the license, indicate any approved changes, do not use it for commercial purposes, and do not distribute any derivatives. More details and the license deed are at Creative Commons.
The AMS currently publishes student Manuals for each of these textbooks. These manuals are also being updated and will continue to be sold commercially. The revenue we generate from the manuals will ensure that we can continually update and offer the textbooks via open access. We also offer chapter-by-chapter lecture slides, test question banks, weekly homework assignments, and much more to faculty who adopt our manuals.
Combining the textbooks with our manuals provides you with everything you need to teach an undergraduate introductory course at a price that is still substantially less than commercial publishers.
