Preparing for the Capabilities of New and Next-Generation Satellite Products

The American Meteorological Society (AMS) Committee on Satellite Meteorology, Oceanography, and Climatology (SatMOC) is pleased to offer a short course titled “Capabilities of New and Next Generation Satellite Programs”. This short course will consist of introductions to the planned capabilities of the Geostationary Extended Observations (GeoXO) and the Near-Earth Orbit Network (NEON) programs, followed by in depth coverage on how participants can access and use currently available products to prepare for such capabilities. All sessions will include hands-on exercises engaging with existing satellite systems similar to GeoXO and NEON such as the Meteosat Third Generation Flexible Combined Imager and Infrared sounder, and the Meteorological Operational Satellite-Second Generation for a variety of forecasting challenges such as identifying low-level water vapor and boundaries, monitoring fires, identifying trends in the thermodynamic environments, and observing trends in precipitable water. The short course is primarily designed for students and forecasters but others who are changing careers or moving to a position requiring increased environmental satellite knowledge will benefit from this training as well.

Registration for this course will open in late October.

Course Description:

Participants will be able to rapidly integrate next generation satellite products into their research and forecasting workflows by learning how to use similar existing products from international partners. For example, participants will learn how to use the 0.91 ?m band with the 0.86 ?m imagery to identify water vapor-related features, how 1-km 0.39 ?m geostationary imagery helps to identify smaller fires more rapidly, and where geostationary sounder information can (and cannot) be used to infer atmospheric thermodynamics with very fine temporal resolutions (down to ~15 min).
