The 27th Conference on Severe Local Storms is sponsored by the American Meteorological Society and organized by the AMS Committee on Severe Local Storms. The conference will be held 3-7 November 2014 at the Madison Concourse Hotel in Madison, WI.

While the AMS has secured a special rate for 27SLS, attendees are responsible for making their own hotel  arrangements. The rate is $115 single/$125 double for non-government employees and $94 single/$104 double (per diem) for government employees.

Reservation Cut-off Date
The reservation cut-off date is midnight C.S.T. on September 9, 2014. Any individual reservations or rooming list received after the cut-off date will be accepted on a space and rate available basis.

Guest Room Cancelation

All reservations cancelled after 4:00 p.m. C.S.T. 24 hours prior to arrival and all “no shows” will be charged one night room and tax.

Complimentary wireless internet service in all guestrooms and meeting space
Thank you in advance for booking your sleeping room at the meeting host hotel. In doing so, you’re helping AMS maintain a strong pick-up history for future hotel contract negotiations, helping to keep registration rates as low as possible.


All attendees, including presenters, must register to attend the conference. Registration may be completed in the following ways:

On Monday at 12:00pm, boxed lunches will be available in the Madison Ballroom. The lunch is sponsored by UW-Madison SSEC/CIMSS.

Icebreaker Reception

On Monday from 6:00-9:00pm, an icebreaker reception with cash bar and light appetizers will take place.

Storm Video Night

On Tuesday from 8:00-10:00, we will showcase storm photos and videos. Participants who are interested in contributing their images or video should contact Robin Tanamachi ( or Dan Dawson (

The Madison Concourse Hotel is conveniently located near State Street, the State Capitol, University of Wisconsin campus, Monona Terrace Convention Center, Alliant Energy Center and just 5 miles from Dane County Regional Airport, offering several non-stop flights into Madison, Wisconsin.

The hotel offers an indoor parking garage. The current rate is $10 per night. Additional parking is available across the street at the State Street Capitol ramp (214 N. Carroll Street).

Complimentary Airport Shuttle
A complimentary airport shuttle is available to and from Dane County Regional Airport to all hotel guests. Please use the courtesy phone in the baggage claim area to let the Madison Concourse Hotel know that you have your luggage and are ready to be picked up. The shuttle pick-up area is located outside baggage claim, Door 5. Please make a reservation at the Hotel Front Desk for your return trip to the airport. The airport is 5 miles from the hotel.

Student Opportunities

Awards for Best Poster and Oral Presentations:

Award certificates and cash prizes will be given for the best three student oral and the best three student poster presentations at the conference. In each of these two categories, the first-place winner will receive $200; second-place winner will receive $100; third-place winner will receive $50. To be eligible, the presentation must primarily focus on research completed while the presenter was a student.

Funding Assistance for Students:

Funding is available for students to attend the AMS 27th Severe Local Storms Conference.

1) 27th Severe Conference Organizers Travel Awards:

The Severe Local Storms Committee is offering a $200 travel award for up to two student AMS members presenting at the conference. The award is to be used for travel expenses to and from the conference and lodging in Madison, WI. Funding is available to both graduate and undergraduate students, but is limited to one award per educational institution. Furthermore, the awardee may not receive any concurrent travel support from the AMS (e.g., an AMS travel grant). The selected students will be required to pay for any travel up-front, and be reimbursed by AMS (Jennifer Ives, with the proper receipts after the conference.

To apply, students should prepare a short written statement (no more than one page) declaring their financial need and circumstance, relevance of their research to the conference, their background, and their plans for a career in meteorology. Applicants should also provide a copy of their abstract for the meeting. Applications should be sent in pdf format via email to both conference Co-Chairs: Dr. Curtis Alexander ( and Dr. Karen Kosiba ( and to the AMS Severe Local Storms STAC chairperson Dan Miller ( Applications will be accepted through 15 August 2014 and all applicant will be notified of their application status on or before 31 August 2014. Any questions or inquiries from interested applicants should be directed to the conference Co-Chairs.

2) AMS Student Travel Grants:

See for air/hotel/registration fee awards for student AMS members not presenting at the conference, applications are due 15 August 2014, with notification before the end of September 2014.

3) AMS Student Assistant Program:

Volunteer students are needed for registration and audio/visual support during the conference. Student volunteers are required to be in attendance the entire conference, and be available to work 1/2 each day from Sunday through Friday. The students will work either the first or second shift (i.e., morning or afternoon). For volunteering, the student will get their registration fee waived and $25.00 per day for food allowance. This program is a first come, first served basis. A limited number of students will be needed for the conference. Those students interested should please contact Ms. Jennifer Ives, ( for details.
