Nashville 26th Conference on Severe Local Storms Student Opportunities

Awards for Best Poster and Oral Presentations:
Award certificates and cash prizes will be given for the best student oral and poster presentations at the conference. The first-place winners in each of these categories will receive $200. The second-place winners will receive $100. The third-place winners will receive $50. To be eligible the paper must primarily focus on research completed while the presenter was a student.

Travel funding assistance for students:
Several funding sources are available for students to attend the AMS 26th Severe Local Storms Conference.

  1. 26th Severe Conference Organizers Travel Awards:
    The Severe Local Storms Committee is offering $400 travel awards for up to two student AMS members who are presenting papers at the conference. The award is to be used for travel expenses to and from the conference and lodging in Nashville, TN. Funding is available to both graduate and undergraduate students, but is limited to one award per educational institution. Furthermore, the awardee may not receive any concurrent travel support from the AMS (e.g., an AMS travel grant). The selected students will be required to pay for any travel up-front, and be reimbursed by AMS (Cara Campbell, after the conference with proper receipts.

    To apply, students should prepare a short written statement (no more than one page) declaring their financial need and circumstance, relevance of their research to the conference, their background, and their plans for a career in meteorology. Applicants should also provide a copy of their abstract for the meeting. Applications should be sent in pdf format via email to both conference Co-Chairs: Dr. Pam Heinselman ( and Dr. Michael Coniglio ( and to the Severe Local Storms Committee chairperson Dan Miller ( Applications will be accepted through 17 August 2012 and selected students will be notified around the middle of September 2012. Interested applicants or questions about the award should contact the conference Co-Chairs.

  2. AMS Student Travel Grants:, air/hotel/registration fee awards for student AMS members not presenting at the conference, applications due 14 September 2012, with notification around the middle of September 2012.

AMS Student Assistant Program:
Volunteer students are needed for registration and audio/visual support during the conference. Student volunteers are required to be in attendance the entire conference, and be available to work 1/2 each day from Sunday through Friday. The students will work either the first or second shift (i.e., morning or afternoon). For volunteering, the student will get their registration fee waived and $25.00 per day for food allowance.
