June 14, 2016, Austin, TX
The AMS Short Course on the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R capabilities, products and applications was held on 14 June 2016 preceding the 44th AMS Conference on Broadcast Meteorology in Austin, Texas.
This short course was on the next-generation GOES-R series. This short course provided information on the improved GOES-R Series instruments, including the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) and the Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM). The course focused on the suite of new GOES-R products and their applications for improved environmental observations, forecasts and warnings. These new measurements offer the broadcaster unprecedented information to showcase many environmental phenomena. Short-course participants had the opportunity for hands-on experience with proxy and simulated GOES-R products and capabilities.
The goal of the course was to make broadcasters aware of GOES-R capabilities, how it can improve their services to the viewing public, and what equipment upgrades are needed to handle the new data and products. The course format consisted of a balanced mix of presentations and hands-on exercises demonstrating the applications of the new GOES-R products. Instructors included Tim Schmit (NOAA/NESDIS), Mat Gunshor (UW-Madison/CIMSS), Chris Schmidt (UW-Madison/CIMSS), Scott Lindstrom (UW-Madison/CIMSS), Jordan Gerth (UW-Madison/CIMSS), , and Jim Gurka (CICS/ U.MD).
