We are just over two months away from the 95th Annual Meeting—can you believe it?
In addition to the fantastic scientific program that we have put together for you, we’ve got lots of other events to keep you busy throughout the week:
Weather, Climate, and Society has posted a new Special Collection titled “Tornado Warning, Preparedness, and Impacts” and made up of articles containing research on tornado hazards in three main areas: communication, perception, and response to tornado warnings; vulnerability, preparedness, and disaster assistance issues; and understanding of the spatial and temporal distribution of tornadoes.
The AMS Policy Program recently released a “Climate Change Risk Management” study that identifies potential policy responses to climate change and explores their strengths and weaknesses.
AMS Books has just released Climate Conundrums, a journey through how humans think, derived from the experience of the climate change debate. It is broadly organized around humanity’s relationship with nature, the challenges facing society, and the path ahead for civilization. While no final answers are given, the insights that come from reflecting on these issues can help society find a way forward and help each of us to better understand who we are as humans.

All AMS members should have received an email invitation (from the Statistical Research Center of the American Institute of Physics) to participate in a survey; please look for this important invitation. The survey focuses on the value of AMS membership and services, the work experiences of AMS members, and the demographics of our society. We hope to improve the membership experience for all members; your 20–30 minutes spent participating are invaluable. The article “How to Deal with Climate Change” by Paul Higgins, director of the AMS Policy Program, was recently published in Physics Today.
Through its Climate Studies Diversity Project , the AMS is now enrolling 30 faculty members from minority-serving institutions (MSIs) to attend the next expenses-paid Course Implementation Workshop. The event will take place in Washington, DC, from 17 to 22 May 2015.
The AMS Intern Board provides companies with an efficient way to recruit the most qualified talent at no charge. Students will also find that it is a great way to connect with companies looking for potential interns. New internships, such as the University of Miami’s recent posting for a wide variety of meteorology and oceanography graduate student opportunities, appear each month so check back regularly.
