Spotlight: Women in Weather Hangout

In celebration of Women's History Month, AMS invites you to join us, along with AAS and Northrop Grumman on Wednesday, 25 March at 12:00pm. The topic is "Women in Weather," and will explore the vital role women play in atmospheric sciences and weather workforce issues and opportunities. The panel includes Ginger Zee (ABC News), Maria La Rosa (The Weather Channel), Rebecca Miller (Southwest Airlines), Robyn Heffernan (NWS), Courtney Draggon (NWS),  and Jenny Hibbert (Fugro GEOS).

AMS recently joined with other publishers in the Earth and space sciences as an original signatory on the Statement of Commitment from Earth and Space Science Publishers and Data Facilities. The statement was released in January 2015 by the Coalition on Publishing Data in the Earth and Space Sciences (COPDESS). This effort aligns closely with the revised policy developed by a joint task force from the AMS Board on Data Stewardship and the AMS Publications Commission.

AMS Education is accepting applications for free K–12 teacher summer training programs. Successful participants earn graduate credit. 

• The Maury Project explores the physical foundations of oceanography and is held at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. 
• Project Atmosphere is held at the National Weather Service Training Center in Kansas City, Missouri, and covers atmospheric science topics.

The Father James B. Macelwane Annual Award application is currently open - students may submit original undergraduate research concerned with some phase of the atmospheric sciences.  The student must be enrolled as an undergraduate at the time the paper is written.  Submissions deadline is 12 June.

A memorial service was held on Friday, February 19th for Robert H. (Bob) Simpson, who died on December 19th, 2014, at the age of 102. The service was video recorded by photographer Jason Dixon and is available on the AMS YouTube channel. 

Applications are still being accepted for the Summer Policy Colloquium. Develop your leadership skills while learning about science policy! The deadline to apply for NSF funding is March 31st.
