Theme of the Meeting
The 84th Annual Meeting of the American Meteorological Society will be held 1115 January 2004 at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center, Seattle, Washington. Robert J. Plante is the 2004 Annual Meeting Chairperson.
The 84th Annual Meeting of the American Meteorological Society will be held 1115 January 2004 at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center, Seattle, Washington. Robert J. Plante is the 2004 Annual Meeting Chairperson.
The 84th Annual Meeting is being organized around the broad theme of “prediction.” This past century, the overarching challenge to the atmospheric and related sciences has been to predict weather and climate. These sciences, perhaps more than any others, are tested on a daily basis through the forecasting of the various elements of the earth’s environment. Numerical weather prediction is widely regarded to be among the foremost scientific accomplishments of the twentieth century. Especially significant advances have been made in atmospheric and oceanic forecasting of weather and climate systems over the past 20 years.
Two interdisciplinary symposia are being organized to support the prediction theme. The Symposium
on Forecasting the Weather and Climate of the Atmosphere and Ocean (Craig Bishop and Antonio Busalacchi, co-chairpersons) seeks to explore forecasting advances that may be expected to result from improved observational networks, data assimilation systems, numerical models, and statistical forecasting techniques. The primary purpose of this symposium is to describe the state-of-the-art in forecasting and to facilitate further advances in forecasting science. The Symposium
on Planning, Prediction, and Nowcasting in the Urban Zone (co-chairpersons: Robert D. Bornstein and Walter F. Dabberdt) seeks to highlight the state of the science in urban prediction and to identify important gaps in knowledge, observations, and modeling. The two broad symposia will include invited presentations intended to serve not only those carrying out active research in these areas but also attendees not working directly in these areas who want to become more aware of the latest findings.
The Annual Meeting will also include two named symposia
honoring Norman Phillips and Fred Sanders.
In an effort to improve the formal poster viewing experience there will be two
distinct poster sessions, each two days long. The first is Sunday evening through Tuesday morning and the second is Wednesday morning through Thursday evening.
The Third Annual AMS Student Conference and Career Fair,
entitled "Career Choices—The Sky's the Limit," focuses on active areas and emerging opportunities in the atmospheric and related sciences. Session themes will include emerging trends in science and technology, jobs in the twenty-first century, current issues and topics. The career fair provides students an opportunity to personally interact with employers from the public and private sector and representatives of graduate institutions.
AMS has brought back two events by popular demand. The Daily
Weather Briefing will be held twice each day beginning on Monday morning. The briefing is being hosted by the University of Wisconsin's Space Science and Engineering Center with support from the Seattle office of the National Weather Service. There will be other agency involvement. AMS will also be hosting the Annual
Weather Review after a long hiatus. During this session a number of recognized experts in our fields will review national and world weather. It is expected that the major snowstorms in the spring, the early onset of the hurricane season and other significant events will be covered. Stay tuned for frequent updates as the 2003 weather season continues to unfold.
The AMS Annual Meeting is the host to the largest exhibit
program anywhere in the atmospheric, oceanic, and related sciences. Exhibitors come from the United States and abroad with over 100 organizations showcasing a wide range of products, publications, and services. The show allows organizations to make major announcements and roll out new products. Demonstrations of new and innovative equipment are given daily. The exhibit schedule is designed to encourage both social interaction and provide an opportunity to look at future trends in equipment, systems, and software.
The Annual Meeting will be preceded by a number of short courses, a briefing for first-time attendees to the meeting, the Annual Review, and Fellows Awards and Welcome Reception.
