Minutes of the July 19, 2010 Meeting
Smoky Mountain AMS Chapter

The July meeting was held in Oak Ridge at the NOAA Atmospheric Turbulence and Diffusion Division (ATDD). After dinner at Ed's Pizza, around fifteen people met to hear Grant Goodge speak about "Downburst, macroburst, microburst, derecho, bow echo, or straight-line wind: is there any difference?". As always, Grant gave us a very informative and educational talk. He explained the differences between each type of wind event with a series of charts and graphs. He then provided pictures from various areas of the country, which showed the aftermath of each of these wind events.

After Grant's presentation, the group voted to make a few policy changes with the local chapter. As of 1 January 2011, a visitor will only be allowed two free visits before they'll be expected to become a member and pay the annual dues. Also as of 1 January 2011, a couple will no longer have to pay $20 each for annual membership. Instead, a couple will pay one fee of $30 for the year. This was done in the hopes of bringing more people to hear the very interesting speakers that we've enjoyed in the past. We also found out that we're entitled to FREE stationary from the national AMS for our group. We thought it would be nice for each speaker to have a letter to put in their portfolio or resume from our chapter thanking them for giving their time and speaking with our group. We felt this would be a nice courtesy to provide our guest speakers, and will start doing this in the near future.
