Minutes of the July 19, 1999 Meeting
Smoky Mountain AMS Chapter


The meeting started with dinner at 6:00 P.M. at "Abraham's" in Morristown. The program took place at the National Weather Service Office in Morristown and began at 7:10 P.M. There was brief report of the treasurer. The current balance is $194.80.

Our speaker was Mr. Jeff Craven of the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) in Norman, OK. Jeff has experience at several different NWS offices, the last of which was Elko, NV where he was the Science and Operations Officer (SOO). Jeff has been at SPC about 2 years now. His duties include issuing mesoscale convective discussions, watch updates, and working on the outlook desk where he issues the Day 1 and Day 2 outlooks. These are known as the "red" storm areas on The Weather Channel thunderstorm outlook maps. Jeff conducted a 20-30 minute presentation on the forecasting of tornadoes and supercells. There was also tours of the NWS/Morristown facility to see what they do there and how they do it.
