Executive Council members present
The Oregon AMS welcomed back its members for yet another season with a great "kick-off" meeting at Stark Street Pizza in Portland. A raffle was held in appreciation to the many KPTV weather bloggers with the net proceeds of $27 to benefit the Oregon AMS treasury. The main coveted prize was a Oregon Scientific wireless thermometer/rain gauge. In addition, Mark Nelsen donated several items that included umbrellas, to coffee mugs, to signed photos of on-air weather talent, etc.
Oregon AMS President Steve Pierce gave a welcoming presentationand talked about upcoming events, including the newly revamped and extended OMSI winter weather forecast meeting that will be held on October 29th from 10am to 3pm in Portland. Steve also discussed goals for the Oregon AMS for the 2011/12 season, which includes growing the chapter membership by 20%.
A short television weather personality presentation was given by Vice President Bobby Corser.
John Rinier then recapped membership dues and gave the attendees a financial update. The Oregon AMS membership increased by four new members and twenty-one renewed that afternoon
Fellow AMS member and meteorologist Steve Todd (National Weather Service Portland) gave an update on the newly installed coastal radar in Langley, Washington. Steve also advised that a new upgrade was just wrapping up on the Portland radar as well. Both the coastal radar as well as the Portland radar will now be one of the first in the country to utilize "dual polarization" technology which allows the radar to scan both horizontally as well as vertically. Upgrades will continue across the country over the next two years.
AMS members Phil Welke and Tyler Mode also presented some great weather related photos from around the Pacific Northwest. The meeting adjourned at approximately 3pm.
The next Oregon AMS meeting will be at OMSI on Saturday, October 29th 2011beginning at 10am. Oregon AMS members please note --- this will be a very large meeting. Please plan to arrive no later than 9:30-9:45am to assure you will get in the door. Maximum capacity at OMSI is 300-350 people. Seating is available on a first come, first served basis.
