Mark Casteel, an AMS Member, is Associate Professor of Psychology at the York, Pennsylvania campus of the Pennsylvania State University. He is trained as an experimental/cognitive psychologist, having received his MA degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and his PhD degree from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. His research examines factors that influence a message's comprehension, for both children and adults, such as the need to generate inferences, the need to make necessary connections, and the influences of working memory. Recently, in collaboration with a colleague (Joe Downing, a crisis communication researcher), Dr. Casteel has been examining how recipients process, understand, and use National Weather Service warning and watch messages. This research addresses multiple issues: (a) The elements of a message that are most important, from a user's perspective; (b) the impact of technological limitations on the message's content and delivery; and (c) the message variables that make it more or less likely for a user to respond appropriately. Dr. Casteel has published his research in a variety of peer-reviewed scholarly journals, including Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition; Journal of Research in Reading; Developmental Psychology; Journal of Experimental Child Psychology; Discourse Processes; and Acta Psychologica. Dr. Casteel received Penn State's University-wide Eisenhower Teaching Award in 2012, Penn State York's teaching award twice, and was the recipient of Penn State's 1993 Roy C. Buck Award for outstanding publication by a non-tenured social science faculty member.
