Alan Betts, a Fellow of the AMS, owns and operates Atmospheric Research in Pittsford, Vermont. He has a BA degree in natural sciences (physics, 1967), an honorary MA degree from Cambridge University (1971), and a PhD degree in meteorology from Imperial College, London (1970). From 1971 to 1979, he was a professor at Colorado State University, before founding Atmospheric Research in 1979. From 2005 to 2007 he served as President of the Vermont Academy of Science and Engineering. Dr. Betts is author of more than 140 peer reviewed papers. He received the Meisinger (1978) and Jule G. Charney (2007) Awards from the American Meteorological Society, and served as the AMS Robert E. Horton Lecturer in Hydrology in 2004. In addition to AMS, Dr. Betts is a fellow of the American Geophysical Union, the Royal Meteorological Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
