Dr. Chad Kauffman and Celsius Bear coleading a weather briefing.
In July, the AMS Education Program was thrilled to return to offering resident experiences as part of both the 31st Project Atmosphere and the 29th Project Ocean professional development courses for K–12 teachers. Nearly 50 competitively selected teachers, including two Canadians supported by CMOS, participated. Teachers learned from experts and each other! They built aquatic robots, kayaked, were exposed to numerous datasets and tools they can use in their classrooms, and even became certified GLOBE cloud observers. (And did you spot the assisting instructor?) These tuition-free graduate courses are made possible with support and partnership by NOAA, NWS, NASA, the Office of Naval Research and Pennsylvania Western University.

Weather, Climate, and Society is now accepting manuscripts about “Social Science Datasets, Research Instruments, and Data Ethics.” This will be a category for researchers who want to highlight their datasets and data collection instruments and facilitate their reuse. The section is also intended as a place to foster discussion of the ethics of data management and data sharing, especially that involving human subjects research.

"I decided I wanted to be a physicist as a kid because I loved learning about atoms and electricity—it seemed completely magical that something that was too small to see would make up the world around me. As I began to study science in more depth, I also realized how much power our scientific understanding of the world has to shape the way we live, and it was important to me to pursue research that aligned with my values. Climate science has been a great way to marry my love of wonder and a desire to thoughtfully impact the future."
— Laura Riihimaki (University of Colorado Boulder and NOAA Global Monitoring Laboratory), whose BAMS article describes how ARM’s spectral radiation measurements are maturing into a dataset that has the potential to address new sets of problems. Read more of her interview in your June print or
