AMS Environmental Satellites Short Course: From GOES-R and JPSS Satellite Data to Disaster Response: Every Decision Counts

The AMS Environmental Satellites Short Course: From GOES-R and JPSS Satellite Data to Disaster Response: Every Decision Counts will be held on Sunday 12 January 2019, preceding the 100th AMS Annual Meeting in Boston Massachusetts. Preliminary programs, registration, hotel, and general information will be posted on the AMS Web site (www.ametsoc.org).
NOAA satellites are entering into their robust operational phases and their data is increasingly available. Forecasters and other environmental decision makers need to be fully aware of how to use these satellite capabilities to their most effective operational value.
The Short Course objectives focus on the 2020 AMS Annual Meeting Theme: AMS Past, Present, and Future: Linking information to knowledge to Society. The course agenda is established to help participants understand the heritage of satellite data and products as they have shown their operational value over the decades. Details will be provided on the end-to-end collaboration from satellite data and product providers to those users that apply these capabilities to meet their operational requirements. Participants will be instructed on how to easily access satellite products and leverage them in their systems when key decisions need to be made. Hands-on exercises will be tailored based on well-known environmental disasters. Instructors will work with participants to increase their understanding of how satellite capabilities can be used to support the evaluation of courses of action and make decisions that benefit society and safeguard the public.
The short course will use these real-world scenarios to demonstrate the operational use of satellite capabilities. Scenarios may include US and international environmental disasters & high impact weather events. This course will be created to be useful for all participants regardless of their level of satellite knowledge and forecasting experience.
Participants are expected to bring their own laptops to be able to participate in the hands-on exercises.

All short course/workshop attendees must register and wear a badge/ribbon. Short course/workshop registration is not included in the 99th Annual Meeting registration, and short course/workshop registration does not include registration for the 99th AMS Annual Meeting.
