Jon Malay

Jon Malay

Jonathan (Jon) Malay is a Fellow and Past-president of the AMS. After graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy (1973, Oceanography) and the Naval Postgraduate School (1974, Meteorology), he served as a surface warfare officer before specializing in the geophysical sciences and space-based remote sensing, and in 1984, he was a finalist for NASA astronaut.  Retiring at the rank of Commander, he began a second two decade career in the aerospace industry, serving in leadership roles in multiple professional organizations in addition to the AMS. In 2014, he retired from Lockheed Martin Corporation where he had served as the company’s day-to-day liaison with NASA and NOAA Headquarters in Washington, DC and was very involved in their winning of GOES-R spacecraft and instrument contracts, plus multiple NASA science missions in heliophysics, planetary science, and astronomy/astrophysics. In addition to serving with the AMS Policy Program, he is an author and frequently speaks about science and space systems to cruise ship audiences.
