In the tropics the majority of precipitation is provided by organised systems of convection, which are often responsible for precipitation extremes. New tools to understand these systems include km-resolution (k-scale) global and regional convection-permitting models and latest generation satellite observations, while machine learning tools supplement our dynamical and thermodynamic understanding.

The school will summarise our current understanding of convection using these tools and address  How does deep and shallow convection organise in k-scale models? Can energy budgets help understand their precipitation biases? What are the recent advances in convective parameterization? The school will involve a combination of introductory and advanced lecture material and a week of hands-on data analysis in participant projects, with the opportunity to attend the 4th edition of the established conference on convective organisation (WCO4) in the 2nd week.

Structure:
Week 1: Introduction to convection, radiation, RCE, overview on stochastic parameterization, observations…
Week 2: Stochastic cloud models/machine learning.  WCO4 conference.
Week 3: Specialist lecture and hands on projects.

Call for Contributed Abstracts: All applicants are encouraged to submit an abstract for a poster presentation and a contributed talk during WCO4. Abstract templates are available below for download.

Grants: A limited number of ICTP grants are available to support the attendance of selected participants from developing countries.  In addition, the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS) have made co-funding available to support participant attendance from all countries, but with priority given to PhD students and junior scientists from PIMS-member universities. There is no registration fee.

You can submit your application only to the WCO4 conference (week 2) at the following link:
