AMS Glossary Word of the Month

 

Term used by World War II pilots to refer to thunderstorms that form regularly over the Tiwi Islands (Melville Island and Bathurst Island) just to the north of Darwin, Australia.

 

The pilots used these storms as navigation aids to return to Darwin after flying sorties.
