Spotlight: Congratulations to the Newly Elected President-Elect and Council Members

The results for the election of the 2016 AMS President-Elect (President in 2017) and Council are now in. Congratulations to Matthew Parker, 2016 President-Elect, and new Council members Philip Ardanuy, Andrea Bleistein, Sue Ellen Haupt, James Kinter, and Nicole Riemer.
The AMS Nominating Committee welcomes recommendations from the membership of candidates for the 2017 President-Elect and Council, which will be considered as that slate is prepared. Such recommendations will be most helpful if they are sent to the Nominating Committee nominatingcommittee@ametsoc.org by the end of December 2015 and are in the form of a 1-page letter describing the proposed candidate’s background and qualifications.

Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker will be speaking at the Presidential Town Hall Meeting at the AMS Annual Meeting on Monday, 11 January, 12:15–1:15 p.m. Pritzker is a key member of President Obama’s economic team, with 27 years of private sector experience. The informal discussion with Secretary Pritzker will be moderated by NOAA Administrator Dr. Kathryn Sullivan.

The video of the Capitol Hill Briefing “Seasonal Weather Forecasting for Agriculture, Energy, and Fisheries” is now available online.
AMS is seeking volunteers to help update the AMS policy statement on “Water Resources in the 21st Century.” The statement recently expired, and a revised version will be created that emphasizes the need for AMS participation in addressing water resource management problems, both domestic and international.
AMS is now accepting applications for the 2016/17 Congressional Science Fellowship. The AMS Congressional Science Fellowship makes it possible for one scientist to spend a full year in the U.S. Congress working on science policy issues. The deadline to apply is 1 February 2016.
Registration is now open for the AMS Policy Program Summer Policy Colloquium, taking place 6–14 June 2016. The Colloquium provides a 10-day intensive immersion in science policy issues. Graduate students, faculty, and professionals in the field of earth and atmospheric sciences and their applications form a cohort that tackles hands-on exercises, hears from dozens of prominent experts, and forges strong professional networking connections. |
