Spotlight: K–12 Teacher Professional Development

Did you know that more than 22,000 teachers across the United States have energized their classes with information and techniques learned through the AMS DataStreme courses? They learn weather, ocean, or climate fundamentals through online courses and become science leaders in their schools and communities.

Testimonial image block: "DataStreme was one of the best courses I ever took. Real data incorporated into real student-centered learning activities. Christine Barretta Irwin, K–12 Teacher"

DataStreme courses are directed toward middle school teachers but open to all K–12 teachers. Teachers who are members of groups traditionally underrepresented in the sciences, or who are teaching students from groups traditionally underrepresented in the sciences, are especially urged to apply. A limited number of special fee waivers are available for the fall semester, so if you are a teacher looking for affordable graduate credits for recertification or salary advancement, , and enroll for the fall semester now!

Profiles from BAMS

Photo of Curtis Walker

“I loved watching several broadcast meteorologists growing up (e.g., Jim Cantore on the Weather Channel, Mike Woods and Al Roker in the local New York City market). Before my research career, I hoped to be on TV with the greats. During every big snowstorm, my dad and I would stand over the Long Island Expressway in our Queens neighborhood and watch the rush hour traffic struggle with challenging weather conditions. Ever since, I’ve loved all things weather (and eventually road weather)!”

New Episode of AMS on the Air!

What is deep learning, exactly? And what are its possibilities for meteorology? Join us for a dive into the fascinating world of artificial intelligence and machine learning with Dr. Amy McGovern, Lloyd G. and Joyce Austin Presidential Professor, School of Computer Science and School of Meteorology, and Director of the NSF AI Institute for Research on Trustworthy AI in Weather, Climate, and Coastal Oceanography, University of Oklahoma. !

New Policy Program Study

We are pleased to share the . This is a synthesis of community input that was gathered through brainstorming sessions and an online portal over the last few weeks. Thank you all who contributed! The study was in response to a request from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for rapid community input and was supported primarily by a small grant from NSF. Keep an eye out for similar reports from AGU and GSA (perhaps other scientific societies as well).
