Spotlight: Summer 2022 Teacher Development

In July, the AMS Education Program was thrilled to return to offering resident experiences as part of both the 31st Project Atmosphere and the 29th Project Ocean professional development courses for K–12 teachers. Nearly 50 competitively selected teachers, including two Canadians supported by CMOS, participated. Teachers learned from experts and each other! They built aquatic robots, kayaked, were exposed to numerous datasets and tools they can use in their classrooms, and even became certified GLOBE cloud observers. (And did you spot the assisting instructor?) These tuition-free graduate courses are made possible with support and partnership by NOAA, NWS, NASA, the Office of Naval Research and Pennsylvania Western University.

Profile from BAMS

photo of Laura Riihimaki posing with ARM equipment

"I decided I wanted to be a physicist as a kid because I loved learning about atoms and electricity—it seemed completely magical that something that was too small to see would make up the world around me. As I began to study science in more depth, I also realized how much power our scientific understanding of the world has to shape the way we live, and it was important to me to pursue research that aligned with my values. Climate science has been a great way to marry my love of wonder and a desire to thoughtfully impact the future."

Wildfires and Drought; Is Climate Change Making them Worse?

12 August 2022 at 12:00 PM Eastern

There is no doubt the intensity of wildfires and drought have increased in recent years, but is this an effect of climate change? Dr. Andrew Schwartz, lead scientist and station manager at the University of California, Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Laboratory, may have some answers on whether or not a warmer climate is truly fanning these flames.
