Guidelines for Use of AMS Certification Logos

The American Meteorological Society (AMS) is a non-profit, professional society whose objectives are the development and dissemination of knowledge of the atmospheric and related oceanic and hydrologic sciences, and the advancement of its professional applications. In order to ensure that rights and privileges of all members, as well as the Society as a whole are upheld, the AMS has developed the following guidelines for the proper use of the AMS name, its Seal of Approval, the designation Certified Consulting Meteorologist (CCM), Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM), Certified Digital Meteorologist (CDM), Certified AMS Teacher (CAT), and the official seal of the AMS:

In accordance with Article XII, Section 3(F) of the AMS Constitution, members shall not use or display the official seal of the AMS, the Seal of Approval, or the designations Certified Consulting Meteorologist (CCM), Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM), Certified Digital Meteorologist (CDM), or Certified AMS Teacher (CAT) unless duly authorized by the Society.

When individuals have been granted the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM), Certified Digital Meteorologist (CDM), the Seal of Approval for Radio or Television Weathercasting, the Certified Consulting Meteorologist (CCM), or the Certified AMS Teacher (CAT) designations, the following guidelines should be followed:

  • Designations should be used in such a way that no implication of endorsement of a sponsor, a sponsor's product, or commercial venture may be interpreted.
  • The Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM), Certified Digital Meteorologist (CDM), the Seal of Approval for Radio or Television Weathercasting, the Certified Consulting Meteorologist (CCM), and the Certified AMS Teacher (CAT) designations are awarded to individuals and not places of employment or programs. Therefore, visual or aural announcements should reflect this (e.g., "[Name] has been granted the AMS Seal of Approval, the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM), Certified Digital Meteorologist (CDM), the Certified Consulting Meteorologist (CCM), or the Certified AMS Teacher (CAT) designation by the American Meteorological Society”).
  • The CBM logo should be displayed as gold lettering on a black background. In order to ensure a clear distinction between the Seal and CBM logos, the Seal of Approval logo may not be displayed with the colors gold/yellow and black.
