The 104th Annual Meeting of the American Meteorological Society takes place in Baltimore, Maryland, 28 January–1 February, 2024.
[Boston, MA—January 18, 2023] The American Meteorological Society’s (AMS) 104th Annual Meeting will gather thousands of people at the Baltimore Convention Center 28 January–1 February to attend the world’s largest annual meeting focused on weather, water, and climate. The AMS is the professional society for everyone in the atmospheric and hydrologic sciences and services, including meteorologists, research scientists, emergency managers, academics, weather broadcasters, and more.
“The theme of our 104th Annual Meeting is ‘Living in a Changing Environment,’” says AMS President Brad Colman. “It’s about our community’s role in informing solutions to the global climate and environmental crisis. The AMS community is the home of innovative work in climate change research, mitigation, and adaptation, and this meeting puts that work front and center. We’re also highlighting conversations about how we can better collaborate within and outside our enterprise to help society take the actions necessary to mitigate the environmental challenges we face.”
Presidential Conference
The keynote event of the conference, the Presidential Forum, will be moderated by renowned atmospheric scientist Dr. Kerry Emanuel, an expert on climate change and hurricane physics, in conversation with Bob Inglis, Executive Director of RepublicEn and former Congressman from South Carolina, and Monica Medina, President and CEO of the Wildlife Conservation Society and former Deputy Assistant Secretary at the State Department. Panelists will discuss how to overcome barriers that limit the reach and implementation of climate science, and how to ensure that science is viewed and put to work as a public good as we navigate our uncertain environmental future. AMS President Colman will provide an introductory address. The Forum will take place Sunday, 28 January at 4 p.m. U.S. Eastern time, and will be streamed online.
The 2024 Annual Meeting will also feature twelve interdisciplinary Presidential Sessions and a number of additional sessions jointly sponsored with specialty conferences — all focused on this year’s theme, including panel discussions and keynote presentations. Presidential sessions include topics like climate change and public health, climate interventions, and overcoming barriers to carbon-free energy generation, along with events like a conversation with Dr. Jane Lubchenco and other White House officials about research priorities and the National Climate Assessment, and the signing of a multi-institution pledge between scientific societies and media organizations to work together on science-based climate communications. Weather, Water, and Climate Science
The AMS 104th Annual Meeting plays host to more than 40 scientific conferences and symposia presenting the cutting edge of research across the atmospheric, hydrologic, and oceanic sciences. Conference topics include Climate Variability and Change, Air Pollution Meteorology, AI for Environmental Science, Space Weather, Environmental Health, the New Energy Economy, Tropical Cyclones, Polar Meteorology, Major Weather Impacts, and Indigenous Weather, Water and Climate Knowledge Systems.
Two named symposia will celebrate the contributions of eminent atmospheric scientists. The Daniel Keyser Symposium, taking place Monday, 29 January, will address synoptic-dynamic meteorology and feature a dinner honoring Dr. Keyser, an AMS Fellow and research professor at SUNY Albany. The Kuo-Nan Liou Symposium, Tuesday, 30 January, will discuss new advances in the fields of atmospheric radiation and other areas touched by Dr. Liou (1943-2021), who was a winner of the AMS’s Carl-Gustaf Rossby Medal and member of the IPCC team that won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.
Other Events
“Town Halls” at the Annual Meeting offer a chance for the whole weather, water, and climate community to discuss important issues together. Topics this year include solar eclipse observation, the effects of hydrologic extremes (e.g., droughts and flood) on marginalized communities, tips for addressing climate change mis/disinformation, and a discussion of ongoing policy priorities. An awards ceremony Wednesday, 31 January at 6 p.m. ET will honor those who have achieved great impact across the weather and climate enterprise (from researchers to teachers to journalists), conferring honors such as the renowned Carl-Gustaf Rossby Medal.
Throughout the week, career and networking opportunities abound for students, researchers, and professionals at all levels. The meeting will feature career development opportunities including skill-building short courses, a Career Resource and Graduate School Fair, and networking and community-building events for underrepresented groups, students, and early-career professionals. The 23rd Annual AMS Student Conference takes place at the Baltimore Convention Center immediately prior to the 104th Annual Meeting, 27-28 January.
