Page Charges, Waivers, and Fees

Publication charges help cover the cost of publishing and disseminating research results. They should be regarded as an essential and proper part of an author’s research budget. These charges cover a portion of the editorial, composition, and related work costs prior to publication. AMS expects all authors to pay the assessed charges.

BAMS Authors! Please consult BAMS Page Charges. The page charge structure of BAMS differs significantly from the page charge structure of the technical journals.

Journal Page Charge Structure

Fee per typeset page: $145. There is no fee for color figures if page charges are paid in full. Authors should provide figure files for production as one complete figure per file to minimize processing costs for AMS and to enable AMS to continue subsidizing the cost of color.

Possible Additional Charges (All Papers)

In addition to page charges, additional charges may be assessed for excessive changes/edits to typeset proofs, the processing of multiple figure files for single figures, and keying in of manuscript files that cannot be converted to an editable file.

Open Choice Fee

For a fee of $800, authors of fully paid papers can choose to have the full contents of their Early Online Release and/or final published paper made immediately available to all, subscribers and nonsubscribers, on the AMS Journals Online site once the payment has been processed. Authors who have received a waiver of page charges can choose Open Choice for a fee of $1,200. The fee will be invoiced after acceptance.

Waivers of Page Charges

AMS has a limited budget for waivers. Authors must demonstrate a legitimate lack of funding to cover charges. Waivers must be requested during initial submission. For more information on the AMS waiver program and to request a waiver, see Page Charge Waivers.

Color Processing for Authors Receiving Waivers

The cost of color processing cannot be waived. Authors receiving full waivers must convert all color files to black-and-white. Authors receiving partial waivers must cover the processing costs for any color files:

  • $490 for the first file
  • $390 for the second file
  • $150 for the third and subsequent files

Schedule for Page Charge Forms and Final Invoice

Production Stage Action Required
Initial Submission The corresponding author must fill out a Journal Cost Estimation and Agreement Worksheet and commit to covering the estimated charges should the paper be accepted. If an author does not have the funding to cover the estimated charges, a partial or full waiver must be requested and granted before the paper can begin peer review.
Revision No action required, but for their own budgeting purposes, authors may wish to use the worksheet above to recalculate their estimated page charges when revising a paper, especially if the number of pages in the paper has changed considerably. Authors should not submit this worksheet to AMS.
Author Proof AMS issues an invoice, which must be paid before the paper is published. The invoice amount reflects the actual number of typeset pages, the Open Choice fee (if applicable), and any additional charges.
Publication Once full payment has been made, the paper is posted online in the next available issue in progress. The print version follows when a sufficient number of papers allows for a complete issue.
