The AMS Short Course on the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R Series capabilities, products and applications will be held on 20 June 2017 preceding the 45th AMS Conference on Broadcast Meteorology in Kansas City, MO.
This course is designed to introduce users to the new capabilities made possible by NOAA’s next generation GOES-R Series Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI), Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM), and derived products for improved environmental intelligence, forecasts and warnings. These new measurements will produce more timely, detailed, and accurate information than ever before. Short-course participants will have the opportunity to receive hands-on experience with GOES-16 data, showcasing the many applications to help improve forecasts and warnings of high impact weather and environmental phenomena. The primary goal of this course is to familiarize the broadcast community with GOES-16 capabilities, and how it can improve their services to customers, saving lives and property.
The course format will consist of a balanced mix of presentation and guided hands-on exercises demonstrating application of the new GOES-16 products.
Instructors include subject matter experts from NOAA/NESDIS, and various Cooperative Institutes.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops or tablets to be able to participate in the hands-on exercises.
