Spotlight: Explaining Extreme Events from a Climate Perspective
The sixth edition of this BAMS special report has been released. The report presents assessments of how human-caused climate change may have affected the strength and likelihood of individual extreme events. It is the first of these reports to find that some extreme events were not possible in a preindustrial climate.

What's New?
AMS joins AGI
The American Meteorological Society (AMS) joined the American Geosciences Institute (AGI) as the AGI Federation's 52nd Member Society on October 23, 2017. AGI is a nonprofit federation of scientific and professional associations that represents more than 260,000 geoscientists. Founded in 1948, AGI provides information services to geoscientists, serves as a voice of shared interests in the profession, plays a major role in strengthening geoscience education, and strives to increase public awareness of the vital role the geosciences play in society's use of resources, resiliency to natural hazards, and interaction with the environment.
AMS journals partner with Kudos
AMS Publications has signed a multiyear contract with Kudos, a service providing free author tools for sharing plain language summaries of their journal articles and measuring their impact. Authors with a Kudos account will be able to measure clicks, views, downloads, citations, and alternative metrics to learn which communication channels are most effective and view the results in one place.

A shareable PDF of their plain language summary and a link to the official published article online will also be provided to share on external scholarly networks in lieu of the copyrighted article itself. Configuration and implementation of this exciting service is being planned for the first quarter of 2018.

omega
AMS Glossary Word of the Month
omega sun
A two-image inferior mirage of the setting or rising sun in which the erect image of the solar disc, which forms the top of the omega, touches the inverted segment of the lower image, which forms the base of the omega.

When the sun is even lower, all that is seen are two images of the upper segment of the sun floating back to back above the optical horizon and having an outline similar to that of an American football. The stage at which only two images of the upper rim are seen is one way in which the green flash is formed.
