New President and Council Members

AMS President Elect Roger Wakimoto

Many thanks to all AMS members who voted for our President Elect and Council. We are excited to announce that the 2017 AMS President Elect is Roger Wakimoto, and new Council members are Elizabeth J. Austin, CCM, John Cortinas, Jr., Tanja E. Fransen, Adam H. Sobel,and David J. Gochis who was selected by the Council. Click here for more information on election results.

As we welcome the newly elected leaders, the AMS Nominating Committee is already soliciting recommendations for next year. Candidates will be considered as the slate for the 2017 election is prepared. Send a 1 page letter of recommendation to the Nominating Committee by 31 December 2016.

Town Hall Lectures

The AMS is proud to initiate the European Meteorological Society (EMS) Town Hall Lecture series at the 2017 Annual Meeting. The first EMS Lecturer, Tanja Cegnar, was the recipient of the EMS Outstanding Contribution Award in 2015. Ms. Cegnar works at the Slovenian Environment Agency to improve exchanges and communications among European broadcasters and initiate communication training for scientists. Following the lecture, a discussion with a panel of AMS Certified Broadcast Meteorologists will focus on industry practices and challenges in the United States and Europe.

 

Congressional Science Fellowships

Applications for the Congressional Science Fellowship will open in early December. This is an opportunity for a PhD scientist to spend a year on the Hill working on science policy issues. Learn more »

The AMS Career and Networking Fair opens for Student Conference attendees Saturday, 21 January, and for all Annual Meeting attendees Sunday and Monday. Organizations looking to recruit highly talented individuals can arrange interviews; and students can learn about job opportunities, network with employers, and meet recruiters from graduate school programs all at no cost.

 

AMS Statements being considered by the AMS Council for approval are posted on the AMS Web site at least thirty days before the Council vote. AMS Members are encouraged to check the AMS Web site regularly and provide comments. There are currently three draft statements open for comment: Best Practices For Publicly Sharing Weather Information Via Social Media, Flash Floods: The Role of Science, Forecasting, and Communications in Reducing Loss of Life and Economic Disruptions, and Water Resources in the 21st Century. Members may also serve on a drafting committee; a team is currently being assembled to draft a new informational statement on Scientific Uncertainty in Weather, Water, and Climate.

 

AMS members are invited to attend the 2017 Presidential Climate Leadership Summit February 13-15, 2017 in Tempe, AZ. Organized by Second Nature, this is the largest national gathering of higher education presidents and chancellors committed to bold climate action. The summit is designed for campus sustainability teams, including specialized content for presidents, faculty, and staff. AMS is a partner organization with Second Nature in the summit, building on a partnership developed through the AMS Climate Studies Diversity Project. Early Bird Registration for the Summit ends December 9.
