We are happy to announce that Wendy Abshire will take over as director of the AMS Education Program in September as Jim Brey is retiring this summer. Wendy has been affiliated with UCAR’s COMET program for many years and brings terrific experience in educational activities and distance learning, in addition to her own energetic leadership and vision. "I am deeply honored to be joining the AMS staff and eager to work in support of the Education Program's mission to educate teachers and ultimately increase public scientific literacy. Over time, I also aspire to leverage my experience in continuing education to create more training opportunities for AMS Members and our partners," Wendy said.

The State of the Climate in 2015 has been released. See how the world fared in our annual climate checkup. This report, compiled by more than 450 scientists from 62 countries around the world, provides a detailed update on global climate indicators, notable weather events and other data collected by environmental monitoring stations and instruments on land, water, ice, and in space. The study will also be published in the August edition of the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (BAMS).

Voting for the 2017 AMS President-Elect and Council is now open to all AMS full members. The elected leaders of AMS are charged with advancing AMS’s goals in the areas of weather, water, and climate. We value and appreciate your vote. The deadline to vote is November 22nd.

The AMS 2015 Annual Report is now available. The report is a summary of the work done in each of AMS’s programs and highlights events from the year.

Apply now to participate in Geosciences Day on Capitol Hill, Sept 13–14. The event is an opportunity for scientists to learn about Congress, build relationships with their Members' offices, and help ensure that Members of Congress have access to the best available scientific information relating to weather, water, and climate.

Calling young scientists! Establishing a career in the atmospheric sciences can be challenging and can present many open questions. Fortunately, we can learn from the experiences of established members of our community. This September, AMS president Fred Carr and European Geosciences Union Atmospheric Sciences Division (EGU AS) president Annica Ekman will participate in virtual interviews on Facebook and Twitter, fielding questions from you, young scientists, about their experiences navigating a career in our dynamic field. Be sure to visit the AMS and EGU AS Facebook/Twitter pages in September to learn more!

The American Meteorological Society Policy Program is pleased to announce the release of a new study, titled "Understanding the Water Landscape of the United States: A Review of Science and Policy Recommendations." An analysis of thirty different reports from federal agencies, interagency task forces, and non-governmental organizations revealed over 800 specific recommendations, which fit into 12 high-level categories. The study provides an easily accessible synthesis of these recommendations. You can read the full study on the AMS website.

Student Travel Grants are available for the 2016 AMS 28th Conference on Severe Local Storms. Don’t miss the chance to receive complete travel coverage to attend the 28th Conference on Severe Local Storms. The deadline for this conference is September 16th. Detailed information and applications can be found on the AMS website. Questions? Contact Donna Fernandez.

Last week in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, members of the public, private, and academic sectors came together to discuss collaboration and enterprise issues. Hosted by the Board on Enterprise Communications, the three day event had a strong focus on water, and included a tour of the new National Water Center on the University of Alabama-Tuscaloosa campus. Recordings of the presentations will be available shortly. For more information, view the program online.

AMS has signed on to a letter with 30 other organizations, urging Congress to adopt the scientific consensus that man-made climate change is real and poses major risks to humans. We signed a similar letter in 2009.

The NOAA-supported Project ATMOSPHERE and US Navy-supported Maury Project K–12 teacher professional development workshops have been core AMS Education Program offerings for more than 20 years. In July, the Project ATMOSPHERE workshop was held at the NOAA National Weather Service Training Center in Kansas City and focused on the latest technologies and techniques for sensing, analyzing, and forecasting weather. The Maury Project, held in July at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, covered the physical foundations of oceanography and performed ship-based and coastal analyses. For more information on both programs, visit the AMS Education K-12 teachers' page.

The AMS Policy Program will hold two workshops in the fall focused on water information and management needs for coastal resilience. Both workshops will take place in Washington, D.C. The workshop on Sept. 27–28 will focus on the East Coast and Great Lakes. The workshop on Oct. 18–19 will focus on the West Coast and Gulf Coast. Email yseidgreen@ametsoc.org to receive updates on the workshop, or to learn more visit the Policy Program website.

AMS Education Resource Agents (AERA) Network is an important component of the AMS Education Program. On June 28th, 40 AERA Leaders from across the U.S. traveled to Gulfport, Mississippi to acquire new learning tools and materials to share with Datastreme participants and local community educators. Participants reviewed the changes to the DataStreme curriculum for next year including newly added health topics to Climate and an expanded use of the US Climate Resilience Toolkit, and discussed the general state of the AMS Education Program. Several field trips allowed for the team to tour the NASA Stennis Space Center, National Data Buoy Center, Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command, Naval Research Lab, and Keesler Air Force Base. For more information visit the AMS Education Program website.
