Robert Byrd

Robert Byrd

Robert Byrd was born in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, and was raised in West Virginia. He served in the United States House of Representatives for three terms and was elected to the United States Senate in 1958. As Senate Majority Leader, he was a powerful advocate for the coal companies of his state during the debates of the 1977 Clean Air Act Amendments and helped delay clean air talks in the 1980s.
