Authors' Submission Information

  • The AMS has revised its submission policies. Please go to http://www.ametsoc.org/au_upload/index.cfm and follow the instructions carefully. This page also includes a link for reporting upload problems. Manuscripts may not be sent to the Chief Editor’s office. If you encounter difficulties, please use the “help” feature on the upload page.  The Chief Editor’s office does not manage the upload process, which is handled by AMS headquarters in Boston.

  • Please indicate whether you are uploading a NEW submission (a category that includes a formerly rejected paper) or a REVISION of a paper presently undergoing peer review.

  • * If your paper is a revision of a manuscript previously submitted and rejected by MWR, upload it as a NEW manuscript and reference the previous MWR number in your comments on the upload page.

  • Please make sure all figures are legible, including fonts within legends, that figure captions appear as required, and that your paper is double-spaced and ordered in accordance with AMS guidelines.

  • If your manuscript contains color figures, please check the AMS website so that you are aware of color charges. The manuscript considered in the review process must be the same as that intended to be printed, i.e., if you do not intend to pay color charges, please make sure your submitted paper contains grayscale figures where appropriate. http://www.ametsoc.org/pubs/Authorsguide/pdf_vs/agbrf2002.pdf

  • If you submit a revision, please upload your responses to reviewers with your paper.

  • If your manuscript was rejected previously by MWR, a cover letter describing how you have changed the manuscript is helpful for the Editor.  Otherwise, a cover letter is usually redundant unless it contains information not already provided on the manuscript upload page or in the responses to reviewers.

Advice to Authors Responding to Reviewers' Comments

Contributed by Dr. Roger M. Samelson.

  • Identify each conceptually independent reviewer comment in some straightforward way: quote the first few words, refer to numbers if given, etc. In general, don't repeat or quote the entire reviewer comment. Most reviews are best read as a continuous document, and the editor or reviewer will want to refer to the original anyway.

  • For each such comment, list the corresponding revisions made to the manuscript, by section, page number, etc, as specifically as possible. If practical, quote added or edited passages in the response. Avoid general statements, such as "Section X was rewritten to address the reviewer's comments," that give little specific information as to what changes were made and to which paragraphs and sentences.

  • If no revision was made in response to a comment, say that and explain why. Recognize that if a detailed response to a reviewer comment is necessary, the inclusion of at least some portion of the response in the revision is frequently merited, even if it is a rebuttal. Most of the questions that occur to reviewers will occur to other readers.

  • In general, focus on clearly identifying what revisions were made, or requested but not made, and explaining why they were or were not made. Avoid responses that are not clearly tied to specific changes in the text or figures, or that don't specifically rebut certain suggested changes.

  • Include an introductory statement that briefly outlines the main elements of the response, especially if major changes were made, or suggested but not made. This can be helpful simply because it allows the editor or reviewer to estimate quickly how much time the review will take to complete.
