The Radiation Studies Branch (RSB) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is actively involved in helping the public health community and general public prepare to respond appropriately to an unintentional release of radioactive material to the environment. Such a release could happen in many ways, including a terrorist attack involving an explosive radiological dispersal device, (i.e., a RDD or "dirty bomb" or an improvised nuclear device).

If nuclear or dirty bombs were detonated in the U.S, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the CDC, and the entire public health community would play a critical role in mitigating injury and loss of life. There is also a unique and crucial role for broadcast meteorologists based on weather data, plume movement, and its combined affect on radioactive fallout. The time to expand a partnership between CDC and broadcast meteorologists is now.

New Mountain Innovations: "Innovations for a Sound Environment" we specialize in acoustic products that enhance our environmental. We discovered and patented Acoustic Mosquito Larvicide which has become a proven non-pesticide, environmentally friendly approach to killing mosquito larvae. Our NM100 Ultrasonic weather station is a seven sensor, multi-function weather station which uniquely integrates GPS. This system provides true wind from moving vehicles, specifically introduced by New Mountain Innovations for use in mosquito spray trucks. This improves application efficacy while reducing the impact pesticides can have on the environment. New Mountain Innovations has since added new software allowing this multi-function weather station to be use by a full range of customers including professionals, academia, research, industry and home use. Emergency personnel and homeland security experts can enhance first responders to hazmat situations by providing real time true wind indications in their vehicles. While knowing true wind to navigate an up-wind approach, exposure to potential toxic situations can be mitigated. A functional hardware demonstration of the NM100 is presented in our booth.

Win-Weather, Inc. is a new company that focuses on the forecaster instead of just the computer models. By tracking their own accuracy, Win-Weather users can immediately adapt and improve their future forecasts. Learning from hits and misses is one of the most important, but neglected, part of forecasting. Most television forecasters simply do not have the time to compile, review and analyze their own performance accuracy. However, by leveraging the Win-Weather application, this time consuming task becomes easy and accessible, with automated analytical trends available on demand.

This application will help forecasters answer the following questions: Do I generally have a warm or cold bias? Do I favor the AVN MOS too much? How accurate am I on average over a week, month, or year? Win-Weather answers all of these questions and more, and it only takes minutes to learn.
