The Eighth Symposium on Fire and Forest Meteorology, sponsored by the American Meteorological Society and organized by the AMS Committee on Agricultural and Forest Meteorology, will be held 13– 15 October 2009 at the Red Lion Hotel, Kalispell, Montana.

ACCOMMODATIONS
Red Lion ExteriorAll meeting sessions for the conferences will be held at the Red Lion Hotel in Kalispell. The mailing address for this facility is Red Lion Hotel, 20 North Main St, Kalispell, MT 59901. A block of rooms has been reserved at the hotel for meeting attendees at a special rate of $93/single room, plus tax. It is also possible to upgrade to a suite for $128. To receive these special rates, attendees must request a room under the American Meteorological Society room block. Government per diem rates are available for those who qualify on a limited basis. Attendees will have to provide a government ID card or travel orders at time of check-in to get the government rate. This information is not needed to make the reservation.

courtyardReservations must be made prior to 9 SEPTEMBER and must be accompanied by a one-night deposit. Reservations made after that date will be on a space-available basis. Subject to room availability, these special rates will be available the weekends before and after the conferences. We urge you to make reservations early since space is limited. Confirmation of registration will be sent once the registration form has been processed at AMS Headquarters. REGISTRATION WILL NOT BE PROCESSED WITHOUT PAYMENT. Payment may be made with check, money order, purchase order, or credit card (MasterCard/VISA/American Express). Checks must be drawn on a U.S. bank and payable in U.S. dollars. Refunds (less a $25 processing fee) will be granted only for cancellations received before 3 OCTOBER.

On-site Registration
The AMS registration desk at the Red Lion will be open for conference
registration on Monday, 12 October, from 5:00–7:00 P.M., and Tuesday through Thursday during the hours of the conference.

WEDNESDAY LUNCHEON/BANQUET
Speaker Bio
Bob Mutch, Fire Management Applications, Missoula, MT, will be the Symposium’s lunch speaker.  Bob is retired from a 38-year career in forest fire research and fire management with the U.S. Forest Service in 1994. His areas of special interest include forest fuel management, fire ecology, fire behavior prediction, wildland fire training, public and firefighter safety, wildland fire suppression, prescribed fire in wilderness management, fire safe strategies for the interface, and international assistance. Since 1994 he has served as a fire management consultant with assignments in Brazil, Bulgaria, Ethiopia, India, Italy, and Mongolia for the United Nations and the World Bank, as well as domestic projects in the United States. His first fire work with the Forest Service was as a smokejumper in Missoula, Montana, in the mid-1950's. Later served for 11 years on a national Type I fire suppression team as a Fire Behavior Analyst.  Bob was appointed Board Member for FireSafe Montana in 2008; and elected Board Member for Painted Rocks Fire District, also in 2008.  He holds a B.A. degree in biology and English from Albion College in Michigan, 1956 (received a Distinguished Alumni Award from Albion College in 2005), and a M.S.F. degree in fire science from University of Montana, 1959 (received an Honorary Doctorate degree in Forestry from the University of Montana in May 2007).

A Formal Poster Viewing will be scheduled at a later date.

BEYOND THE MEETING
A tour of Glacier National Park will be scheduled for the Friday following the conference. Information will be posted later.

Driving Directions from the Glacier Park International Airport:
9.1 mi – about 15 min
1. Head southwest on Runway Rd toward Lasalle Rd/US-2 0.4 mi
2. Turn right at Lasalle Rd/US-2 6.5 mi
3. Turn right at US-2 2.0 mi
4. Turn left at N Main St/US-93 Destination will be on the right 0.2 mi

Hotel Shuttle:
A complimentary shuttle service to the Red Lion from the Airport meets every incoming flight to Kalispell. If you find you’ve missed the shuttle, please call the front desk at 406-751-5050 and they can send another shuttle to pick you up. You can make arrangements to get to the airport at the end of the conference from the front desk. Parking. There is no charge for parking at the hotel.
