The AMS Committee for Environmental Responsibility invites you to learn more about carbon footprint of everyday food purchases and electronics. The Green Ninja Carbon Game, developed by students and faculty at San Jose State University, starts with a basket of ordinary foods and ask participants to group the foods by their carbon footprint (or embodied energy). Strategy cards are provided to help participants, while a second level of the game further expands into activities like driving and buying consumer electronics. Hands-on activities from Spark UCAR Science Education let visitors experience how much energy it takes to run small household appliances. |

CoCoRaHS (the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network), Founded in 1998, provides a great platform for communities around the country to participate in "hands-on" science right in their own backyards through the daily observation of precipitation. Volunteers of all ages measure rain, hail and snow using simple low-cost rain gauges and hail pads. These observations are then collected and made available on the CoCoRaHS Web site: www.cocorahs.org. These data are used daily by many federal, state and community organizations and businesses. Through consistent observation and data sharing, participants actively learn about their climate, their water resources and the impacts precipitation has on their lives and their communities.
The CoCoRaHS Network currently engages over 15,000 volunteer observers in communities across the United States and parts of Canada. There are over 600 volunteer observers in the states of Louisiana and Mississippi, but we can use many, many more. If you would like to report how much rain has fallen in your backyard, we would love to have you as a volunteer observer. To sign-up for CoCoRaHS visit: www.cocorahs.org and click on "Join CoCoRaHS". It's lots of fun and only takes five minutes a day.

Come meet Professor Polar Bear and become a Climate Kid as these friends share the different ways they’re affected by climate change through lesson plans and their very own activity book. A climate data display will demonstrate the kind of environmental information that the U.S. Department of Energy's Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Facility collects, which scientists use to improve climate models. ARM Education and Outreach strives to promote basic science awareness and understanding of climate change studies by providing educational resources to students, teachers, and communities. Additional materials are available at http://education.arm.gov. |

Deep Earth Academy is the education program of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program in the United States. Its mission is to facilitate and develop programs and materials based on scientific research expeditions to strengthen students' mathematics, science and analytical skills. Our vision is Teaching for Science, Learning for Life™ - using scientific ocean drilling to provide a multidisciplinary approach to Earth and ocean science education. We work to equip educators to teach about the Earth using all disciplines – from chemistry, physics, biology and math to engineering and technology to reading and writing. We strive to help students become better decision makers, problem solvers, science-literate citizens and stewards of our planet.
At this booth, visitors will see a replica of a deep ocean core, explore the process of coring in an especially delicious way, and investigate some of the discoveries scientists make when delving into the deep ocean.

Blowin' In The Wind
Wind is an important aspect of weather occurrences such as tornadoes, hurricanes, thunderstorms, or day-to-day weather. Wind speed is measured in many different ways. Try to determine your own "wind speed" using a Kestrel or a wind gauge. Participants can create a "hurricane in a bottle" and play with an anemometer. Get a free weather sticker! |

Temperature to a meteorologist is the average kinetic energy of molecules at a given time and place. To MOST people, temperature determines how they plan activities and dress.
Participants will learn how to construct a home-made thermometer while young participants will decide how they should dress for different temperatures. |

Our Sun gives us more than just a steady stream of warmth and light, it
regularly bathes us and the rest of our solar system in energy in the
forms of light and electrically charged particles and magnetic fields.
The result is what we call space weather. Just as we know there is
weather on Earth, we also observe weather in space. NASA and NOAA
personnel will be present to discuss advances in this exciting field. Stop
by to learn more about space weather and how it affects civilization in
the 21st century. |

PLAN!T NOW's Young Meteorologist Program, developed with partners the National Weather Service, American Meteorological Society, and National Education Association, takes players on a severe weather preparedness adventure where they will encounter hurricanes, lightning, tornadoes, floods, and winter storms - all while learning about weather science and safety.
The game, which you can play at AMS WeatherFest and online, offers a safe, non-threatening learning environment that shows kids what they need to do to prepare now to protect themselves and help their families when a real storm comes. |
