Beijing Metstar Radar Co., Ltd. (Metstar) is a high-technology company formed in 1996 as a joint venture between the Lockheed Martin Corporation of the United States and China National Huayun Technology Development Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of the China Meteorological Administration. Metstar’s charter is to combine the latest technological advancements in both meteorology and electronics to develop and produce a new generation of weather radars to serve the needs of meteorologists and atmosphere observation services throughout the world. Metstar’s S, C and X-band Doppler WSR-98D radars are upgraded versions of the NEXRAD (WSR-88D), which was designed and produced by Lockheed Martin. Metstar’s WSR-98D’s design is based extensively on the WSR-88D design and shares many features including state-of-the-art computerized control, 24/7 operational capability, real-time monitoring, real-time calibration, and high accuracy and reliability. The data and information produced by Metstar’s WSR-98D radars are formatted such that the system output information can be shared and transmitted through standard Internet links. Metstar’s WSR-98D’s world-class technology has permitted Metstar’s radars to be selected as the radar of choice for the China “New Generation Weather Radar Network.” One-hundred and eleven (111) weather radars have either been installed or are on order for the China network. In addition to producing the majority of Doppler radars for China’s weather network, Metstar has installed or has on order a total of twenty-two (22) systems for international customers, including twelve (12) S-Band systems for IMD, five (5) S-Band systems for Romania, and a C-band and four (4) S-Band systems for Korea. To service the worldwide market for weather radars, Metstar has a high production capability with an annual capacity exceeding 20 systems per year. Metstar continually strives to maintain the highest quality, and state-of-the art products. In addition to WSR-98D production, Metstar has introduced one Boundary Layer Wind Profiler product and two new Troposphere Wind Profiler products, the TWP3 (with 3 km height coverage), TWP8 (with 8 km height coverage) and the TWP 16 (with 16 km height coverage). In 2009, Metstar was selected as a supplier to the China Wind Profiler Network and has already received contracts for 13 TWP3 systems for the China market. Metstar is now participating in the upgrade of the national wind profiler network in the United States. Also, Metstar’s recently introduced X-Band fixed and mobile WSR-98D radars and Metstar has delivered an operational Dual Polarization S-band radar for Korea. Metstar has achieved the ISO9001-2000 Quality Management System Certification and is certified for Radio Frequency Transmission by the National Radio Frequency Management Bureau. All this signifies Metstar’s commitment to growth and innovation and towards providing the best possible products to the worldwide meteorological community.

THE GEONOR PRECIPITATION GAUGE FOR SNOW & RAIN GEONOR T-200B series weighing bucket precipitation gauges are in use by leading meteorological services including NOAA, Climate Reference Network, National Weather Service, National Center for Atmospheric Research, NASA, Environment Canada, The Swedish, Danish, Norwegian and Icelandic Meteorological Services, Canadian Provincial Agriculture Agencies and others. Developed over 20 years ago by the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) to provide accurate snow measurements for avalanche predictions, the T-200B series gages now include the 600-mm, 1000-mm & 1500-mm capacity models, and optional heaters. We offer high-level technical support for start-up, service and data evaluation from our service centers in the USA and Norway. The gauge weighs precipitation as often as once every few seconds using a GEONOR vibrating-wire load cell. This technology, developed by our parent research group NGI, provides the smallest errors obtainable with long-term stability, and minimal temperature effects. Errors are less than 0.1% of full range.
