Kevin J. Hussey, JPL, Pasadena, CA; and J. Witte
The Jet Propulsion Laboratory's (JPL's) Manager of Visualization Technology Applications and Development Group, who created the visualizations and NASA Goddard's Climate Science Communicator and former TV weathercaster will be demonstrating NASA's "Eyes on The Earth 2.0" web application and its "Earth Now” mobile phone application. These can be used by broadcast meteorologists to enhance their presentations and increase viewer interest in understanding weather and climate. Kevin and Joe will also take suggestions from the AMS broadcaster community as to how these applications might be modified to enhance their use on air.
Developed using a state-of-the-art, browser-based video game-engine technology, "Eyes on the Earth 2.0" is an interactive reality visualization that delivers "fresh" data and images from NASA's fleet of Earth satellites to home computers. It also displays the location of all of NASA's 15 currently operating Earth-observing satellite missions in real time. A touchscreen version is being made available for Museums and Science Centers. Feedback on interest in touchscreens for your TV news studio will be welcomed.
Developed as a mobile app "Earth Now" brings a world of ever-changing weather and climate data to your fingertips for both iOS and Android phones. The regularly updated data are displayed as color maps projected over a 3D Earth model that can be rotated by a single finger stroke, or zoomed in and out by the pinch or spread of two fingers. Color-coded legends indicate the relative strength or weakness of environmental conditions. Helpful descriptions provide background information on each data set. "Earth Now" is currently available at the Apple app store and the Android Marketplace.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is the federal agency charged with observing and predicting changes in the Earth’s environment. NOAA plays a vital role in the life of every American through its work in weather forecasts, remote sensing, climate research, fisheries management, safe navigation, and ocean exploration. NOAA’s products and services support America’s economic vitality. Dedicated scientists and staff use cutting-edge research and high-tech instrumentation to provide citizens, TV and Radio Broadcasters, emergency managers, and other decision makers with reliable information as needed.
NOAA is here to engage the AMS broadcast community and discuss innovations in atmospheric science and climate monitoring. Last fall, NOAA launched the Weather-Ready Nation initiative and America's newest polar-orbiting satellite, the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) satellite (Nov 2011). Representatives will discuss the Suomi NPP instruments and its data. The NPP satellite data became available nearly three times sooner than previous missions and is currently being used in NOAA’s global numerical weather forecast system.
NOAA representatives will also provide information on how broadcasters can access real-time data and animation as well as proxy GOES-R products and services. NOAA is on the web at http://www.noaa.gov/. |

My name is Mish Michaels--for years everyone called me "meteorologist." Now most people call me “Mommy Mish” including my 5 year old daughter! When I was her age, an EF2 tornado cut through my neighborhood uprooting trees and doing extensive damage. That life event inspired a long professional journey as a broadcast meteorologist, but these days my adventures are of a different sort---raising my daughter. Through her eyes, my childhood love for weather has been rekindled. She reminds me how fun it is to play in puddles, to build a snowman and to watch the sky again with the wonder of a child. Our experiences together inspired me to create Natural Cloud Cover. The collections are my own personal designs—organic clothing for the weather watcher in every kid! Each piece is built for atmospheric adventures and outdoor comfort. I hope your kids enjoy watching the sky while wearing our clothing!
Natural Cloud Cover is committed to supporting the next generation of atmospheric scientists and weather forecasters. Natural Cloud Cover is proud to partner with the Blue Hill Observatory to support their educational initiatives by donating 10% of our profits.
