Everyone met at the Tennessee Grill near downtown Knoxville around 6:15 PM. After dinner, the meeting commenced at the Ag. Engr. Bldg. on the UT Ag. campus around 8 PM. Howard Waldron (Warning Coordination Meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Morristown) spoke on "The Future of Forecasting":
"We all know that weather is analog, and is not constrained by geo-political boundaries. Past forecasting was restrained by verbal description to these boundaries. In the continued modernization of the National Weather Service, we are beginning the shift from worded forecasts to more accurate graphic representations of the weather. The Graphical Forecast Editor (GFE) is the beginning of this transition. The National Digital Forecast Database (NDFD) is a system where individual office forecasts are joined into one National Database, with near seamless boundaries. The presentation will describe how these forecasts are made, the tools we use, and how to access the information."
