Winter 2001 Palmetto AMS Newsletter The Next PAMS Meeting will be held at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, February 20, 2001 at Shaw Air force base.  Sgt. Andy Million, secretary of PMAS, and Col. Billy Davis will host a tour of Shaw Air force Base.  Shaw Air force base has been upgrading their meteorological department.  A few years back, Col Davis gave us an insightful tour of the meteorological section at Shaw Air force Base which included forecasting products for international weather.  If you joined us a few years back, you may remember that Shaw was in the process of upgrading their meteorological department.  This upgrade has been completed, and the tour should be interesting.  Please contact Andy, Robert, or Clay if you plan to attend this meeting at Shaw Air force base.  Directions to the meeting will be uploaded to the PAMS web site early next week. On November 11, 2000 about 15 PAMS members and their guests met in Atlanta for a tour of The Weather Channel facilities.  For those that haven't been there lately, The Weather Channel recently moved into a new, 8-story building of their own located in northwest Atlanta.  The studios are in the basement of the building and on the day we were there they were minimally staffed with the two on-camera meteorologists and 4-5 people producing graphics (it was definitely a slow weather day).  The Weather Channel started in 1982 with a national
audience of only 2.5 million homes.  It now reaches more than 72 million US cable households.  The Weather Channel also owns all-weather networks in Latin America which adds another 3.4 million households to its total viewer ship. It was rather surprising to discover that The Weather Channel employs more than 900 people. The 2001 Annual Meteorological Society Conference was held in Albuquerque, New Mexico from January 13th-19th.  Two PAMS members presented papers at the Conference.  Matt Parker, meteorologist for Westinghouse at the SRS, chaired the 11th Symposium on Meteorological Observations and Instrumentation.  Matt also gave a presentation.  The title of his presentation was "Ground-Truth Surface Water and Paved Surface Temperature Measurements for DOE's MTI Satellite."  Bob Buckley, meteorologist/engineer for the SRS, presented a paper on "Soil Moisture Measurements and Their Applications at SRS." Bob will be presenting this paper at the Mini-technical conference this year. It's almost that time again !  The tentative date for the annual mini-technical conference is Friday, March 16th.  Any topics relating to meteorology or climatology are welcomed.  The more variety, the better !  We hope to get participation from SRS, The Climate Office, television meteorologists, Shaw Air force Base, USC, and the College of Charleston.  Abstracts should be turned into Clay, Robert, or Andy via e-mail.  Look for more details very soon. We will need judges again this year for the SC science fair.  The science fair will be held Friday evening on March 23, 2001.  Generally, there are four to six judges there.  Meals will be provided to the judges.  Please let Bob Buckley know if you are interested in being a judge this year. Bob can be contacted at (803) 725-1926 or at robert.buckley@srs.gov.  We will need your help ! Clay Lawson, President - (803) 898-4122
