Palmetto Chapter of the AMS

November Meeting Highlights

On Tuesday, November 9th, the Palmetto chapter of the American Meteorological Society held a dinner meeting at Quincys in North Augusta.  Carl Mazzola, an Environmental Program Manager with Stone and Webster Engineering Corporation (SWEC), delivered an excellent presentation entitled "Certified Consulting Meteorologists: A Balance of Knowledge, Experience, and Character".  As a member of the AMS Board of Certified Consulting Meteorologists, Carl provided pertinent information on the certification process.  He emphasized that the goal of the CCM program is not to exclude people, but to include qualified persons.  He also described the process and qualifications necessary for application.  The presentation was well received by roughly 20 chapter members.

Science Fair Judges Needed!!

The annual South Carolina Science and Engineering Fair will be held on Friday, March 24 2000.  The chapter participates      in the judging process of this event each year.  Anyone who would like to be a judge this year should contact Bob Buckley       or Amanda Clarke.

Upcoming Meeting

For our January meeting, we will have a tour of the NWS office in Columbia.  This meeting will be held on Monday, January 31.  Details will be sent out as soon as they are finalized.

Mini-Technical Conference

This is a reminder to all members to begin thinking about topics to present at the 7th Annual Palmetto AMS Mini-Technical Conference.  Once again, this meeting will be held in Columbia in the spring and is an excellent forum for discussing current meteorological interests throughout the area.  Abstracts will be accepted as early as the next meeting.

Dues

Dues for the 2000 year ($10 annually) will be collected at the next meeting.  These dues are used to fund guest speaker meals, science fair prizes, and to support the Mini-Technical conference. If you cannot attend the meeting and wish to pay dues, send a check to Amanda Clarke, this year’s treasurer.  Note that it is not economically feasible to maintain a separate bank
account for the Palmetto Chapter at this time. Thus, if you write a check, it should be made out to Amanda Clarke, and given to one of the officers, who will see that the money gets to the treasurer.
