Palmetto Chapter of the AMS Newsletter

Summer 1997

THIRD MINI-TECHNICAL CONFERENCE:
On 11 April, 1997, the third annual Palmetto Chapter mini-technical
conference was held at the University of South Carolina-Columbia (USC) in
conjunction with the South Carolina Academy of Science (SCAS) Seventieth
Annual Meeting. As in past meetings, the purpose was to have members give
presentations on current work-related projects. A Meteorology and
Climatology topical session was convened at USC and presided by Matt Parker.
In all, 15 speakers from various regions of the Palmetto state and Georgia
including USC, Clemson, the College of Charleston, the National Weather
Service, the Southeast Regional Climate Center, and the Savannah River
Technology Center contributed their expertise in such diverse topics as El
Nino, soil moisture estimation, coastal hazard mitigation, raindrop size
effects on precipitation estimates, sea breezes, wind measurement
techniques, and education outreach initiatives. Thanks to all
who participated and attended another successful meeting!

OFFICER ELECTIONS/DINNER MEETING:

DUES:
Dues for the Palmetto Chapter of the AMS ($10 annually) are used to
fund newsletter mailings, awards for high school/middle school science fair
winners, supplies for the mini-technical conference, and meal tabs for guest
speakers at dinner meetings. At present, the balance is critically low and
all who have not paid are encouraged to pay their dues as soon as possible
to one of the officers by mail or at the next meeting.

UPCOMING CALENDER OF EVENTS:
It was suggested the Palmetto Chapter of the AMS try to organize a
calendar of events for the upcoming year so that members will know well in
advance when meetings occur. This will allow for greater attendance and
information exchange at the dinner meetings. Remember, your support of
Chapter functions is vital to the continued success of the Palmetto Chapter
of the AMS!

Tentative schedule:
	Aug-Sep: Third Palmetto Chapter meeting
	Nov: Fourth Palmetto Chapter meeting

MEETING JULY 10, 1997:
The next meeting of the Palmetto Chapter is scheduled for July
10, 1997 at 7:00 p.m. at the Bowery in Aiken, SC. Our speaker for the

**Directions to the West Side Bowery in Aiken, South Carolina. Located
within city block surrounded on 4 sides by Park Avenue and Richland
Avenue running East-West, and by Newberry St. and Laurens St. running
North-South. (Bee Lane actually runs BETWEEN Newberry St. and Laurens
St. and the entrance to the restaurant is along Bee Lane, but there is no
parking on this road. Also, the 'Alley' runs BETWEEN Richland Ave and
Park Ave, but there is no parking on this road either). Address for the
restaurant is 151 Bee Lane (brick road) and phone number is (803) 648-2900.

>From COLUMBIA: Take I-20 west to Hiway 1. Turn LEFT toward Aiken and drive
into the Aiken city limits. This road is called York St. when you get into the
Aiken city limits. Stay on this road until you get to Richland Avenue. Turn
right (Hiway 1 also turns to the right and heads toward Augusta--also known as
the Aiken-Augusta Hiway). Travel 2 blocks and turn LEFT onto Newberry.

(1) You may park here and walk through the 'Alley' to your right to get to the
restaurant. As you're walking through the 'Alley', come to an intersection (Bee
Lane) and look to your LEFT. The Bowery is on the RIGHT side of Bee Lane.

(2) You may also continue driving on Newberry until you come to Park Avenue.
Make a RIGHT on Park and look for parking here if you wish (usually difficult).
The West Side Bowery will be located on the RIGHT side of the road on Bee Lane.
The entrance to the restaurant is down Bee Lane and to the LEFT.

(3) You may also continue on Park Ave. until you reach Laurens St. Turn RIGHT
and look for parking. The 'Alley' will be to your RIGHT. Walk down the 'Alley'
until you reach an intersection (Bee Lane). The Bowery will on the RIGHT side.

Columbia residents may also take Hiway 302 which eventually runs into Richland
Avenue after passing the Owens Corning Plant. The same directions as above then
apply.

>From AUGUSTA: Get onto the Aiken-Augusta Hiway (Hiway 1) and travel east
toward Aiken. This road turns into Richland Avenue. Stay on this road and
pass through numerous traffic lights until you get to Newberry St. Turn RIGHT
and follow Steps (1) to (3) above.

Note that many of the downtown Aiken streets are boulevards (opposite-moving
traffic lanes are physically separated by grass, trees, etc.) which can be
frustrating. Fortunately, there is usually not very much traffic.
