Spring 1999
The second session was chaired by vice-president Robert Buckley. Topics in this
session included tornado occurrences in South Carolina over a 40-year period, the

radar to estimate precipitation, the monitoring of sea temperatures near Charleston, the
relation of ozone patterns to automotive emissions, and ozone forecasting and regulations
in South Carolina.
Following the conference, a dinner meeting was held in which new officers for the

Science Fair Highlights
The Palmetto Chapter of the AMS participated in the 43rd Annual Central South Carolina
Region II Science and Engineering Fair in Columbia, SC on March 5, 1999. Awards for the
best project in two categories (Junior, grades 5-8; and Senior, grades 9-12) were
designated and included a certificate from the AMS and a National Audobon Society handbook
on North American meteorology. Greg Carbone, Amanda Clarke, Matt Parker, Jerry Sanders,
and Robert Buckley served as Palmetto AMS judges in this year's event. Selected winners:
JUNIOR: "Air Pollution", by Laura Amick, Gilbert Middle School,
Gilbert SC. She discussed an experiment to determine varying levels
of air pollution at different locations within Gilbert, SC.
SENIOR: "The Effect of Acid Rain on Deteriorating Marble and
Granite", by Nicole Edmund, Spring Valley High School, Columbia, SC.
She tested various materials to aid in determining building
degradation due to acid rain.
Upcoming Meeting
The next meeting is planned for May 20, 1999 at the Southeast Regional
Climate Center in downtown Columbia, SC. Amanda Clarke will take us on
a tour of the facility, and give a demo of the SERCC's web site and the
new on line database, CIRRUSWeb. Since we are meeting at the Climate
Center rather than a restaurant, we will have heavy appetizers, which
we will collect money for. We will start the meeting at 7:00, but try to come early to get
some food. Please mark this date on your calendar. We look forward to seeing you
there.
A map is on
the Internet so you will be able to find the Climate Center.
