Flood Response You Can Take to the Bank, what does that mean?
This title is a play on an old colloquialism describing the benefits of a partnership which is so valuable its worth investing in; "taking to the bank". Proactive "best practices" by the whole local community (citizens, businesses and jurisdictions) with external partners like NOAA (National Weather Service and River Forecast Center) and DOD (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers) ahead of the next major flood event can lead to such effective flood warning and protection of life and property that it is worth investing in. This presentation examines an ongoing partnership, encouraging the audience to explore:
- lessons from a January 2012 flood which "surprised everyone";
- what has been, can and is being done now to reduce the "surprise" and increase the effectiveness of flood response;
- improved methods for identifying a flood event's risk (before and during), and preventing/reducing risk through rehearsed flood damage reduction activities.
